Refrigerator

This afternoon (i.e., about three hours ago) the InFilm crew visited the Marina del Rey headquarters of Rhythm & Hues, the big-time visual effects and animation house. Below is an mp4 of the company’s digital nerve -center room where all the hard drives and processors operate 24/7. The climate is similar to that of a treeless plain in Northern Canada in late November.

  1. Jeff writes often of the lack of soul in many contemporary movies, particularly in the blockbuster “entertainments”, but I submit to you all that there is more soul in a few frames of Harrryhausen than in all the crass terabytes stored in all the refrigerators and backup racks of magnetic and digital media: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9kmjW73-v4
One artist in a studio the size of a garage produced all that, and if he made a mistake or had a power outage, he just started over again.
Jeff, next time you’re in the Bay Area, drop by Kerner Optical (it’s at the old ILM stages) and check out how old-school models can still co-exist and compete with sterile workstation renderings… It’s a helluva lot more soulful than a refrigerator tour.
