Unwise?
My immediate, honest-to-God, solar-plexus reaction to today’s news about Rob Marshall being the likely helmer of Jerry Bruckeimer‘s Pirates of the Caribbean 4 — a project that warrants the same degree of respect and esteem as Jaws 4: The Revenge — is that it’s not going to help matters if Marshall earns a degree of Best Director consideration for Nine later this year. My gut tells me the Bruckheimer gig is going to hurt in the same way that Eddie Murphy‘s starring role in Norbit helped put the kibbosh on his Best Supporting Actor campaign in ’06/’07 for Dreamgirls.
I’m still confused why people disliked At World’s End, other than good ol’ kneejerk never giving it a chance.
It was the best of the three, with truly creative ideas, cool imagery and an actual story to tell. A thousand miles past Dead Man’s Chest.

Otherwise, you’re saying that your reaction won’t help him if he gets nominated, which is the sort of pompousness you’re oft accused of, generally unfairly.
I liked the whole series, truth to tell. Each individual film was too long, but what blockbuster isn’t these days?
The fourth one should be even better because they’ve likely jettisoned Bloom and Knightley for good. Just two hours of Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp trying to outchew the scenery. Better than another Transformers by a long shot.

Really? I can’t tell them apart at that level. I like ‘em all in about the same way (the first one was a more fun surprise the first time around, so might have an edge). They’re each too long (but there’s nothing specific I’d lose) in the same general way. They all have too much Bloom and Beckinsale. The only difference is the first one doesn’t have enough Depp, where the other two have too much Depp unneccessarily (I’m saying they don’t justify it well story-wise, they just cut to him because he’s popular).
That probably sounds negative, but I enjoy them all. They’re all fun movies which are better than the standard Hollywood blockbuster fare.
That said, no Verbinski is a bad idea; Verbinski is a really strong director now, and will only be getting more respect as he goes on.
The last two Pirate films were AWFUL. Nothing but CGI vomit projected up on the big screen. Way too long. Painful sits indeed!
If it is Depp and Geoffery Rush that could be interesting. I am not a huge fan of Orlando Bloom and thought that he just dragged the moive down whenever he was onscreen. It should depend on the story and script. However with Bruckheimer involved that won’t stop him from getting the moive mad even if the script sucks. I still think that my favorite movie that Bruckheimer has been involved in is The Rock. I wonder if partner Don Simpson helped keep Bruckheimer in check. Simpson died shortly before The Rock was released. Don’t know how much Simpson was involved in that film, but still something to think about.

Except that Norbit came out a couple weeks before the Oscars, while Pirates 4 won’t even be in production yet for next years awards.

Yeah…I mean the part where Orlando Bloom marries Keira Knightley during the final battle…freakin’ brilliant.
The first Pirates was nowhere close to being in a class with the first Jaws. Doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with the first Jaws.
But the Jaws sequels plummeted drastically in quality, while the Pirates sequels didn’t fall off much at all. If anything, the Pirates sequels were all far superior to the Jaws sequels.
After Memoirs of a Geisha, Rob Marshall should thank the Weinsteins he ever got another directing gig. He can’t mess this up any worse than he did that movie.
inspired idea. sort of like JB getting mike newell for something like prince of persia. sure, he did a potter movie, but nothing like persia. marshall has a great eye. they’ll hire a terrifi d.o.p. and the second unit team will be aces and marshall will get a nice paycheck and the movie will make a mint. end of story really. jerry bruckheimer is the most seductive person in the industry.

Why can’t they make the 4th Pirates a musical?
The Pirates movies were among the more handsome blockbusters you’ll ever see, so this makes sense. Better than hiring some action hack for hire like Rob Cohen.
I liked At World’s End far more than the first two but I did cringe during that stupid wedding scene. The worst thing about that whole series was Verbinski’s Stephen Sommer’s like directing. I have a love/hate thing going on with the series. I like elements of it but so much of it is crass. If Depp wasn’t in them I know I would have hated them all.
I’m so sick of movies needing to be so shrill and full of bombast. I don’t know if Marshall directing will change much.

I’m just wondering why Marshall’s getting any work at all, when Geisha bombed so horribly. The guy’s clearly a one-hit wonder. And changing directors for POTC 4 only works if they pick a director who can have fun with the material, not blow the budget on set designs.

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley must be the least charismatic screen couple in history. I thought the first one was terrible, so forced in tone. Will never see the other two.

Actually liked the whole trilogy and enjoy watching them back to back. If you’ve ever read Tim Powers’ classic “On Stranger Tides,” those films do a reasonable job of capturing its peculiar mix of Caribbean fantasy.
But Rob Marshall? Verbinski isn’t exactly an auteur, but he exhibits a certain level of gonzo style (allowing Depp to “explore” that character certainly showed some willingness to take chances). Rob Marshall just seems like a studio guy who’ll deliver the goods and not make any waves.

I’m not sure I understand the question; Rob Marshall was nominated for the first feature film he directed (after a TV-movie), but I can think of at least five people in the last ten years to be nominated for their first film (and, hell, Mendes won).
