“Well, what can I tell ya? Last year, two or three…it goes way back, I suppose. I can remember entertaining suicidal thoughts as a college student. At any rate, I’ve always found life…demanding. I’m the only child of lower middle-class people. I was the glory of my parents, ‘my son the doctor’…you know. I was always top of my class, scholarship to Harvard, the boy genius, the brilliant eccentric. Terrified of women. Clumsy at sports. My home is hell. I left my wife a dozen times. She left me a dozen times. We stay together through a process of attrition. Obviously a sadomasochistic dependency.”

The second I heard George’s voice.

Damn, the guy’s family is really dysfunctional, almost comically so.

For some reason, though I can’t put my finger on it, there is something about Chayefsky’s monologues and long-winded dialogue that is so…him. This monologue sounded similar to almost every single monologue Holden had in NETWORK.

“Good evening. Today is Wednesday, September the 24th, and this is my last broadcast. Yesterday I announced on this program that I was going to commit public suicide, admittedly an act of madness. Well, I’ll tell you what happened: I just ran out of bullshit. Am I still on the air? I really don’t know any other way to say it other than I just ran out of bullshit. Bullshit is all the reasons we give for living. And if we can’t think up any reasons of our own, we always have the God bullshit. We don’t know why we’re going through all this pointless pain, humiliation, decays, so there better be someone somewhere who does know. That’s the God bullshit. And then, there’s the noble man bullshit; that man is a noble creature that can order his own world; who needs God? Well, if there’s anybody out there that can look around this demented slaughterhouse of a world we live in and tell me that man is a noble creature, believe me: That man is full of bullshit. I don’t have anything going for me. I haven’t got any kids. And I was married for forty-three years of shrill, shrieking fraud. So I don’t have any bullshit left. I just ran out of it, you see.”

We need more stuff like this in movies.

P.S. Just read Wells/Leydon dust-up on Hot Air. I never read Hot Air. I was surprised to find some familiar names. Now I know where all the Victorians went.

  • At the moment, you’ll have a feeling of proud. The articles by China’s manufacturers are not only in a good quality, but also in a great many of quantity, and in a very lower price. For example, a same suit Made in China, might marked five to ten dollars that would cost one hundred dollars that made in Western countries. Many people couldn’t afford for it but Chinese goods are most popular now than ever before. The popularation of Chinese objcets is almost covered the market place all over the world, including the European and American markets.
