Green Zone

Why did Universal bump Paul Greengrass's Green Zone into March 2010? Oh, that's right, I forgot -- they figured the Academy would never nominate two Iraq War movies for Best Picture, and that The Hurt Locker was too well dug in in this respect (i.e., as one to nominate) so the hell with opening it during the ultra-expensive awards season, etc. Right? Seriously, I haven't a clue. Has anyone posted hard facts about their decision, or at least a better theory? It opens on 3.12.

Trailer makes it look like an action film, not an Oscar contender. Maybe that's all it is.

The Hurt Locker is the most overrated film of the year. It was directed like a 24 episode, and it seemed like every soldier in that movie was completely incompetent.

With regard to Green Zone: That trailer kind of sucks. Greengrass certainly had no hand it. It's Bourne in Baghdad. But we all there's more to it so whatever. I can't wait for this. I liked the original title, though.

It looks fine to me. Just a gripping action thriller. Glad that all the Oscar talk is out of the way of it so we can just enjoy it and praise it all year long.

I thought it was because Universal didn't have enough marketing money in the bank, which is also why THE WOLFMAN was pushed back. In any case, it looks more like THE KINGDOM than THE HURT LOCKER...a movie with a twitchy Greg Kinnear as the bad guy isn't in the Oscar hunt.

Hmmm. Seems they've cut the words "green zone" from the front cover of the book and binned the rest. Shame.

Maybe it's Damon oversaturation btw Invictus and The Informant!.

If anything, I'd say it's that -- don't think Informant! will get much Oscar push, but you know Invictus is going to be pushed, and HARD. Hell, it's practically the reason the movie exists. I'm sure Damon will be the focus of a lot of that pushing -- not as much as Eastwood, obviously.

I hate trailers act as a mini version of the movie. I love Greengrass and will watch ANYTHING he puts out until he proves me wrong, but I sort of feel like I've just seen the entire movie for god-sakes.

yeah that looks absurd. Medicated DeeZee is entirely on point too, this is absurd conspiracy fluff. What a bastardization of a great book, with a much better title. How'd they go with something so banal over even just EMERALD CITy.

Universal shuffled most of its late 2009/2010 slate after its string of bombs earlier this year. Wolfman was bumped, too.

I'm sure it'll be excellent, but I just hope it offers more than the trailer, which seems to want to distil it down to Bourne 4 meets Body of Lies meets The Kingdom. All good movies, just I expected this Green Zone would be quite a bit different.

this trailer is trying to fool hispanic party elephants into seeing a movie that i presume is way smarter than the trailer implies.

Man, I sure hope the movie is smarter than the trailer implies, cause that doesn't look good at all, and I say that as a fan of most of the participants involved.

It does rather astound me that Greengrass gets absolutely no criticism from the cineastes regarding his obsession with shaky-cam, while the likes of Bay are lambasted for it. I remember reading a review of Bourne 3 when one of the nerd reviewers - either McWee or Devin Faraci - said that he raised the bar for action photography or something like that. Really? A lot of it is fucking hard to follow. I prefer the normal scenes of people talking - it's clear Bourne 2 & 3 are far superior in that sense - but the actual action was probably easier to follow in Liman's effort.

Neill Blomkamp showed brilliantly this summer how you could mix verite-style camerawork with coherent action.

I watched BOURNE IDENTITy again recently, it makes a very strong case for itself. The brief shootout with Clive Owen is classic, as is the climax with Chris Cooper and the spiral stairs. I still think SUPREMACy is the champ, but despite Greengrass' excesses.

it was pushed because..as usual..Greengrass was behind schedule. The film wasn't going to be ready end of the year so that's why it was pushed...not a secret

I'm sure the trailer would've been cut differently if they were thinking Oscars. Valkyrie had an Oscar bait trailer and an action-thriller trailer. More recently Shutter Island had a second trailer cut for it's new release date, switching the emphasis to suspense thriller more than psychological thriller.

I have seen the movie yesterday and it was no great movie for me. Sometimes the story line was hard to follow and in the end Freddy popped up out of nothing and mixed himself into the story. Enjoyable for just a movie but if you want to see a great movie I would pick something else.
