Reboot Required

After that pretty good teaser trailer this Salt one-sheet has to be called a disappointment. It's been obvious from the get-go who Salt is. The fact that Angelina Jolie plays her has been well established by the trailer, as well as the fact that she's Russian and smoky-eyed and given to various feats of acrobatic derring-do. The other problem is that the face could almost belong to someone else. Is it Angie or a cyborg or Megan Fox's malevolent sister?

I find it odd the tagline so closely resembles "Who is John Galt?" - and, of course, Jolie has circled a feature adaptation of "Atlas Shrugged."

yeah, damn. That looks like Megan Fox. I have to agree, the tagline question is VERY dumb.

I don't think the tagline is that dumb. "Who is Salt?" suggests there's more to her than meets the eye. I don't think they're literally asking the audience who the character is. More like the Salt we think we know has all sorts of hidden secrets, etc. "Who is the real Salt?" would be more appropriate, I guess.

Screw the tagline, I hate the artwork. Looks like a a book jacket for a trashy memoir. Remember the days when movie posters used to suggest the kind of imagery you might see in the movie? Not a checkout stand at WalMart.

I thought she was accused of being a Russian mole. Did Wells give something away here? Is this a "No Way Out" kinda deal?

The font is the worst part. Looks like that shitty font that prints across the screen in every establishing shot in every techno-thriller of the past decade.

"CIA Headquarters, Langley, VA"

That sort of shit. It's usually accompanied with an electronic vidiprinter sound.

Fuck.

Are we sure Salt isn't a vampire movie? She looks vampirish. Maybe she sucks the blood from people, then pours salt in their wounds.

I've only seen the trailer once, but isn't the whole point that she's actually set up and trying to prove her innocence? Hence the tagline?

They've even got Mission Impossible style mask tearing towards the end of the trailer.

They should use this sort of tagline for a Liam Neeson film, maybe one where he plays a kind of superhero who uses different faces and...hey, wait a second.

jeff

what a literal-minded comment. jolie plays a character named salt, however it's not clear who she/salt is. the identity of the salt character is ambiguous. that is, while she is named evelyn salt, it's not clear who evelyn salt is, not even to evelyn herself

she is identified as a russian spy who will attempt an assassination, but she is not aware of herself as being this person.

the movie is about the dual-identity of the protagonist/antagonist

wells...seriously

I agree with Eloi Manning and Jack South PI. You are taking the question too literally and you may be giving away info. Review your copy Jeff. You may want to edit it before Phil Noyce reads it.

Jeff's issue is that he assumes everybody has already seen the trailer, read synopses, thumbed through the script, marked the release date on their calendar, etc. When, in fact, this poster will be the film's introduction to millions of people.

Geez, I think it's fine. It's also further proof that she should have been Elektra in Daredevil. Of course DD sucked so she dodged one there, but in a perfect world...

Wells was on set of the movie. I honestly think he has no concept or what plot points are fair game or the joy of walking into a movie with no idea what's going to happen. He's proven this time and time again.

Is it a spoiler? I thought in the trailer the dude says she's a Russian spy and that's why she goes on the run.

SPOILER ALERT:

She's "falsely accused" of being a Russian spy and goes on the run to prove her innocence. That's the official. plot. This is a record for Wells. He always spoils movies when he sees them early, but because he was close to the production years out he's pulled a dick move super far in advance.

Noyce is a decent guy and has given some thoughtful discussions of his older movies here in Melbourne. NEWSFRONT is still my dark horse favourite Oz movie of all time, BACKROADS is a tough, underrated movie, and he's one of the few Oz directors that has wholeheartedly embraces genre filmmaking to consistent effect (whether or not you like a couple of the recent movies, they're all solid, respectable productions, something I wouldn't say for the output of a few other directors mining similar material).
