Eagle-eyed Avatar fans might want to take note of possible differences between the IMAX 3-D version and the regular 3-D versions. Netherlands-based HE reader Jonathan Spuij claims he's seen "both the IMAX 3D cut and the regular digital 3D version of Avatar and I noticed two small changes in scenes." Or at least he thinks he did.
"First, when the super-tree gets destroyed, the IMAX cut shows the clansmen trying to fly off their banshees from the top of the falling tree," he writes. "I didn't notice this shot in the regular version.
"And second, there's a shot in the trailer of Sam Worthington sitting by his Avatar-machine in the lab in his wheelchair. The little scene preceded the final video recording in the IMAX version but was cut from the regular version." Wait...I don't get what he's saying here exactly.
Spuij finishes his letter with "is there more or am I just imagining things?" Is he?

I remember seeing the Na'vi flying off the top of the falling tree in the regular digital 3D version.

Even though my eyes perhaps did play tricks one me there was one difference that was really there.
The IMAX version had all the subtitles (Dutch translatsions from English and Na'vi) in the same font but the regular version had the regular English dialogue in one font but the translated Na'vi dialogue in the Avatar font (EG the one used for the title of the film at the end and in the trailers).

The frame is opened up for the IMAX version and should contain a lot more picture info top and bottom. You can see the difference in some of mini-docs that are around the net. I was surprised to see it in 2.35-1 in 3D. I was under the impression that Cameron had decided to do an open frame 1.85 version for 3D as it's a more comfortable ratio for 3D. Check out some of the docs though, the framing looks more open and comfortable, whereas the 2.35-1 image is cropped. Cameron always does this though. Compare the full frame versions of his movies to the letterbox versions, you'll be quite surprised. It's the super-35 stock he uses which allowed you to reframe the film for home video (back in the pan and scan days)

And before "Avatar" and "Star Trek" there was Bill Shatner speaking Esperanto, in the horror film called "Incubus".
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F77k6SQX7iQ&feature=related
As an Esperanto speaker I found it terrifying! His Esperanto pronunciation that is, not the film.

I couldn't be more confused about which format to see this movie in. Wasn't Jeff saying that the actual film print was inferior to the digital version? Does that mean that the baby IMAX is the best place? I thought the real IMAX theaters used film projectors.

From what I've seen the IMAX version offers the better experience, with better sound and a more engrossing picture. It is definitely the better experience. Though both versions I've seen were completely digital prints.

I saw the IMAX 3D version last night. Absolutely f'n amazing! Excellent experience. The film was delayed about 40 minutes due to tech problems in the 1st minute, but nobody minded the wait (although the free IMAX passes we got as a result were appreciated!)
The movie far surpassed my expectations. The 3D is wonderfully immersive and not at all jarring. Solid well-crafted entertainment.
Nothing really said here has been a major spoiler so far. Hopefully the spoilerific dickishness will be kept to a minimum.

My feeling on the matter is - and I know this is an anathema to "liberals" of a certain age - Howard Zinn was ultimately WRONG about "the Great Man" theory of history being a myth; i.e. that "ordinary folk" and "mass movements" were the real driving force of humanity and "great men of history" just took credit for it later.best voip service provider
