More Avatar Upticks

Today's tracking shows that Avatar's first choice number has risen to 22 -- a one-day bump from yesterday's 20 figure -- and that under-25 women who are definitely not interested has shot up from yesterday's 18 figure to 23. Do you see what I mean about Eloi girls? Their resistance to this film is very strong right now, or at least it was yesterday. Maybe they'll chill down once the word seeps through.

Clearly word of mouth is going to drive it. Even if the opening weekend is soft, it'll play all through January when word gets out that its a big screen must-see.

sz: I'm guessing Jeff's talking Avatar, because he's wondering if it will really "change" the industry.

sz: He's doing what any good film writer should do: spreading to the world his thoughts and feelings about a film he loves.

I think it's nice to see Jeff so enthusiastic about a film, and I have no problem whatsoever with all the Avatar posts.

This is a blog about movies. Avatar is a very important movie. There are posts going up about Avatar since its reception is a developing story. What is the problem with that?

sz, Chicago48, consider if you'd come here two weeks ago and asked if he was on Eastwood's payroll, or complaining that this was INVICTUS central, and how laughable that would have been.

I don't think it makes a lick of sense to invoke the term "Eloi" when talking about resistance to Avatar. It's being sold as a popcorn movie through and through. It's for the masses.

Furthermore, young women don't want to spend 2.5 hours watching something that looks exactly like their boyfriend's priority-hogging videogames.

My fiance is a very intelligent, classy, well-educated woman and has no desire whatsoever to see it.

Missed this one, and it might be a tad last minute, but I just got the following info from the Fairfax Regency:

He's talking about it because it is all anyone wants to read about right now. I think the Avatar coverage has been great, much better than the MO'Niqe bashing coverage.

Even the critical reviews agree that it is a dazzling film and all hail Jim Cameron's VFX genius. But even the rave reviews (including Jeff's) concede it would appeal more to geeks and video gamers. So why is it a wonder that it does not rate strongly among female moviegoers? Reviewers' resistance to the Na'vis appearance faded because of the dazzling effects but would the female 18-25s who are less enamored of CGI be as readily won over?

Have we had any discussion at all yet about Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master"? One thread on that would be cool.

Even Drudge had Avatar as his big headline for 24 hours. As I said elsewhere, the Avatar coverage here is phenomenal. Hope we get daily tracking reports next week.

btw, Ebert's Avatar review is pretty astonishing. Say what you will about his 4-star standards but he gave 'Avatar Day' zero stars and has been virtually campaigning against the 3-D transition. Now he writes:

"Cameron's iteration is the best I've seen -- and more importantly, one of the most carefully-employed. The film never uses 3-D simply because it has it, and doesn't promiscuously violate the fourth wall. He also seems quite aware of 3-D's weakness for dimming the picture, and even with a film set largely in interiors and a rain forest, there's sufficient light."

"It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected."
