Jeff, would you lay off the picks for Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique, already???

Both picks are no-brainers, as far as I'm concerned - I liked the two supporting females in Up in the Air, but neither of them were as unforgettable as Mo'Nique.

And sorry, Waltz, what's your gripe with him? You expressed misgivings about Mo'Nique were about she brought no wit to the role of a villian - well Waltz did that in spades, and in multiple languages no doubt.

And man, I have GOT to see The Cove, still pissed I missed it in theatres - it was playing at the Landmark Century in Chicago for only like two weeks. Definitely one I would have liked to have seen in a theater.

I finally watched Julie and Julia this week. I don't understand the acclaim. I love Streep, but that's the weakest, slimmest Oscar touted performance she's given. Even Music of the Heart beats this, and that one was weak. I hope she's better and nominated for It's Complicated ...

And Waltz deserves it, imo.

raygo, no offense at all, but how do you not understand how she's getting recognition? She's Meryl Streep. She could fart into a paper cup for two hours and get hype. I'm not denying her talent, but it doesn't take much for her to get award recognition at this point. She's Meryl Streep. It's almost a given.

And geoff, great point about Jeff's issues with Mo'Nique vs. Waltz's performance. He's the embodiment of everything Jeff said a great villain should be in his Mo'Nique takedown posts. I'm not a fan of Oscar predictions, but I'm positive Waltz is the only lock. I will be effing shocked if anyone but him wins.

That said, I really believe he should be considered for best actor instead of supporting. Sure, it's an ensemble film, but IB is essentially built around him. He has loads of screen time and to say he owns the first 25 minutes is a vast understatement.

As a side note, I would definitely throw Melanie Laurent into mix. As much as Waltz owns the screen, she's the heart of the film, and every decision she makes resonates beautifully.

Steep's main competition was Tilda Swinton in Julia... so that's different enough for ya, isn't it? Yes.. it was Julia vs. Julia....

I agree with raygo. Streep is always good, but what an irony if she gets an Oscar for this performance just because they couldn't decide on anyone else and it's been 28 years since her last one. She should've won for One True Thing over Paltrow for crying out loud.

televisiontears, Waltz would and will be a lock in the supporting category, in lead it wouldn't be near a sure bet. So it's a pragmatic decision.

Who would be considered the "lead actor" in Inglourious Basterds? Waltz is by far onscreen more than every other male actor. The "story" is at least as much about him as it is Shoshanna.

What a crime it would be to relegate Waltz to the Supporting Actor bin simply because he played the villain. If Hopkins can be nominated for Best Actor playing Lecter for SIXTEEN MINUTES onscreen, then Waltz deserves higher praise.

Yes, people really watch Pixar and DW movies, because they're "well-reviewed", and not because they're CG, which explains why Princess and the Frog has only half the opening box office of one of those movies.

Some of you guys make good points about Waltz - if you really think about it, having him as Supporting Actor is almost as ridiculous as the talk was last year for Dev Patel to get Supporting for Slumdog Millionaire....almost....

However, I'm sure that you could make a pretty strong case that Shoshannah is the true protagonist of the story, which almost makes me wonder why Melanie Laurent is not getting any buzz - she was fantastic in the movie and truly brought a unique approach to what could be a very cliched role. I'm sure QT also deserves credit for how he wrote the role, as well......

Also Watlz is not on screen for a huge chunk of time in the middle. I have no problem with the category placement. Especially because this is how he'll win.
