That Voice

In a just-posted interview with A Single Man director Tom Ford, HuffPost associate entertainment editor Katy Hall reports that Colin Firth learns of his lover's death from a family member "voiced by Jon Hamm in a winking nod to his 1960s alter ego, Don Draper."

"All but admitted"? Of course it's him. Is this the first report of this?

Is this a spoiler?

This sounds like a spoiler.

I can't know for sure, of course, as I've avoided reading anything about the plot of A Single Man. It's one of the few remaining prestige pictures that could be magnificent. Based on the nature of the post, this sure feels like a spoiler.

...

Jeff, I swear to God, this better not be a spoiler.

I was actually the one who asked about Jon Hamm (all the quotes in the piece come from a press conference), and everyone in the room kind of a murmured in agreement when I asked. Clearly there's something going on in which either Hamm or his agent didn't want him credited, but come on-- that voice is unmistakable, especially within the early-1960s context. Ford was very nice about hedging the question, though.

Snarf, this plot point is the basic premise of the movie-- just don't watch the clip and you'll be fine.

Phew. Thanks, Katey. I figured that might be the case; it is called "A Single Man," after all.

Maybe if this movie is good enough, I'll finally remember who the hell Colin Firth IS from now on. For a guy who's apparently a big deal (at least to Englit chicks in clunky glasses and gay men), I can NEVER remember who CF is; I've apparently seen him in a handful of things (Valmont, Bridget Jones, Love Actually, Pearl Earring), and he's never made any impression whatsoever.

He just seems like a better looking, duller Colm Meaney.

Also, Jon Hamm is a POOR MAN'S JEFF PROBST. If Jeff Probst had the most dubious hair since Nicolas Cage.

btwn,

This has been reported before. On the film's imdb trivia page I think - I'm not sure, and I'm not going to look for it, but I've heard/read this before.

Lex, take it from me: Colin Firth is really not a particularly big deal for gay men.

I think only the "swoony, middle-aged-women who are still in love with Richard Gere" demographic spend their nights dreaming sweet dreams of Firth.

Why do people think Clooney gave a better performance this year than Colin Firth? To me it's not even close.

He's Mr. Darcy, but I'm gonna go waaaaaay out on a limb and guess you're not a Jane Austen fan.

I actually found this cameo incredibly distracting within the context of the scene. I spent the whole time first trying to place where I recognized the voice from, then pleased with myself that I figured out it was Hamm, then excited at the prospect (ultimately dashed) that Hamm would possibly show up later on in the film, and finally irritated that I wasn't paying attention to Firth during what's kind of a lynch pin moment for the character. It's so on the nose voice casting it goes beyond clever homage. It's also rarely a wise idea to reference a similar piece of art that's infinitely superior as it tends to reinforce where you've gone wrong.

I would suggest only buying Coach products on ebay from a buyer that has sold at a MINUMUM 100 items which included at least 50% of coach purses on sale. Seeing a buyer's previous history will help to protect you when you buy on ebay. I just saw today that some ebay seller's are offering free shipping on the Coach Purse sales. In this economy, it is a wonderful time to get great deals if you have cash available!
