Given the general...well, at least marginal view that Elaine May's Ishtar (1987) is better than its rep and is actually hilarious in portions, it seems odd that today, 22 years after its catastrophic release, there's no domestic DVD available. (A tape was released in 1994, but no DVD was ever pressed.)
Think about that for five or ten seconds. A major event movie that cost $55 million in 1985, '86 and '87 dollars (which would be what by today's dollar? $120 million or so?) with Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman and miles of sand and a rich supply of dry underplayed humor (including some of the stupidest song lyrics ever written), and you can't buy or rent it. And yet it's available on home video in Europe.
Obviously Columbia TriStar Home Video execs still regard this legendary flop (which made only $14 million and change) as some kind of mongoloid child that needs to be kept chained in the basement, even though they had nothing to do with its production. This is residual corporate cowardice in action. Over 15 years since it came out on VHS and not one home video executive has had the courage to say, "Hey, let's put out an Ishtar DVD! Infamy makes for a kind of fame, and maybe it'll sell if we put some effort into the marketing. Times have changed, tastes have evolved."
Ishtar was one of the first "no-laugh funny" films ever released. That was a completely new concept back then, and people didn't know what to make of it. Beatty and Hoffman played a pair of profoundly untalented New York-based songwriters -- I remember that much clearly. I also recall that the first half hour or so played pretty well, and that the film's troubles didn't start until they travelled to Morocco...Ishtar, I mean. I remember that the best no-laugh humor happened when Beatty and Hoffman were compulsively composing awful songs.

Ishtar costarred Isabelle Adjani, Charles Grodin, Jack Weston, Tess Harper and Carol Kane. It was shot by the great Vittorio Storaro. The intentionally awful songs were written by Paul Williams.
"Come look, there's a wardrobe of love in my eyes / Look around and see if there's somethin' in your size."
Ishtar is a Sony asset, a decent (some would say inspired) piece of entertainment, a legendary Hollywood debacle that, like Heaven's Gate, gradually found a measure of respect. Okay, among people with a slightly corroded and perverse sense of humor but still, no one today thinks of Ishtar as a film to be shunned. I haven't conducted a poll, but I'll bet very few critics would put it down, and that most would probably say "not half bad."
So why not put out a no-frills DVD? In fact, why not a DVD/Bluray with a documentary about how one of the biggest bombs in history came to be made (I've been reading the tragicomic story in Peter Biskind's Warren Beatty biography), and how, after time, it came to be seen as a half-decent, curiously off-funny thing, and in some circles as a kind of misunderstood gem. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
"Life is the way / we audition for God / let us pray that / we all get the job."
Here's Janet Maslin 's moderately positive N.Y. Times review. And Roger Ebert's pan.

$55 million in 1985 had the buying power of $114 mil today.
With only 6,000 exclusive titles available on dvd, does this really deserve to be one of them?
But seriously, post a correction to that post or email your boy kehr and tell him his entire thesis is flawed.

I think it's hilarious. There are far worse comedies that ARE available, even if they're not as notorious. And none of them were shot by three time Oscar-winner Vittorio Storaro.
And for those of you without region-free DVD players, a decent widescreen version is floating around torrent and peer-to-peer services, last time I checked.

I remember going to an advance screening with a friend on a Saturday night after we'd had a few margaritas. We thought it was a riot (and I certainly remember the audience laughing as well). I saw it a second time without the benefit of the margaritas and it was just so-so. It deserved neither Sony's over-optimistic support ("It will be bigger than 'Ghostbusters'!" one of their bookers assured me) nor its horrendous reputation, most of which was built up by people who never bothered to see the film in the first place (just like "Heaven's Gate," by the way). So Sony should find a willing tequila producer to put together a DVD/drinks package. Maybe throw in a toy camel (blind, of course) as a party favor. Hell, I'll buy one. And I'll send one to my friend, too. There's two sales for ya.

Anyone here familiar with David Gilmour - the Canadian film critic and author, not the Pink Floyd guitarist? He's long been of the view ISHTAR is a buried treasure. I quote from his book "The Film Club":
"I've taken hit after hit for this film but I remain obdurate. No one would disagree that the story stumbles when the two failed musicians, Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman, arrive in the desert kingdom of Ishtar and get embroiled in local politics. But before and after, there are such comic gems, Warren and Dustin wearing little headbands and singing their hearts out and doing a two-step. Heaven. ISHTAR is a fine, flawed film that was garroted at birth because a peevish press got tired of Warren having so many pretty girlfriends."
I would definitely disagree with the last part - the movie got so many bad reviews because of its budget - but I don't know about the rest, as I still haven't been able to bring myself to see it.

Surprisingly enough this film is and has been available for a while now via Netflix's streaming service. The video quality isn't perfect but it is an anamorphic transfer at least.
I fully agree with Ray in that this film is trying way too hard and you can smell it, which is what kills it. But a bluray with a doc about the incredibly interesting history of the film and its reception and slow rebirth I'd buy in a heartbeat.

ISHTAR isn't to all tastes, but I love it. AICN and HitFix screened it at the New Beverly last year on a double bill with JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO (another misunderstood gem), and, overall, it was well received. When I interviewed Hoffman for LAST CHANCE HARVEY, I got him singing songs from the film. He's anything but embarrassed by it.

Whenever people ask me what my favorite comedy is, I say Ishtar with no hesitation. I caught it on cable years back and I was sick with laughter. It's got its own bizarre sensibility, the songs are the best deliberately bad songs I've ever heard, and it is a kick to see Beatty and Hoffman play Dumb and Dumber as only stars of their magnitude can. I would buy the DVD in a second.

It's not in the same league but NEIGHBORS, another critically trashed Columbia comedy that is at least somewhat interesting, is also unreleased on DVD. The studio did release LEONARD PART 6 in the format though, so go figure.
I love ISHTAR and have since opening day. The New York section is easily the best, but I still love it.

It's probably not on DVD, because Sony would have to pay Hoffman and Beatty more than the thing was worth for residuals, if the deals they made are still valid.
Hey: Yeah, but Howard the Duck went out on DVD, *because* of its notoriety. [I.E. "There's no such thing as bad publicity."] Ishtar's a whipping boy in the vein of Cabin Boy, except pricier. Though the budget itself is probably cheaper, compared to Cutthroad Island...Though once again, Cutthroat Island had cheaper talent attached to it.
Jeremy: Haven't seen Ishtar, but I think Joe was just underrated. It probably made its money back on cable and home video sooner, too.

DZ- "Yeah, but Howard the Duck went out on DVD, *because* of its notoriety"
Wouldn't the same reasoning stand to release Ishtar then? It's still notoriously used when a film runs over budget (Fishtar?) and had a certain movie with giant blue things failed, you would no doubt be spouting the phrase "Ishatar" along with everybody else.
And Cabin Boy also has moments of brilliance. It's not the Dadaist masterpiece that is Freddy Got Fingered, but it's certainly inspired lunacy.

I remember seeing it opening weekend when i was 17 and it played extremely well with the audience. Especially the first 30 minutes. Yes, it does slow down in the middle with the desert stuff, but its still got some great bits in there: The Blind Camel, Grodin's dry humor....
Lots of great lines in this thing....It doesnt deserve its rep and it never did.

George: As I recall, it was #1 during a generally bad year for box office films, so it's not saying much. [I think Predator was one of the few big hits.] Plus, it must have been a real bitch of a time for Columbia, considering Leonard Part 6 also came out in '87.
Winchester: Ishtar is notorious in a different way. Howard's about the FX guy at the top of his game coming up with a bad furry movie, while Ishtar's just a total misfire which was the result of the egos involved on it. One movie's the equivalent of a car-wreck, and the other's akin to investing in the bad bonds at the time the thing was released. In other words, the former holds up because it's so bad, while the second is a relic.

Ishtar is my one of my all time favorite films.(Among many including; The Dresser, My Favorite Year,
8 1/2, Casablanca, Under The Influence, Gloria (original), Judgement at Nuremberg, (original), Cabaret, just to mention a few. Whatev)
The boys (actors, song writers et al) and the girls (director, actresses song writers et al) of Ishtar are hilarious, and clever with moments of brilliance and bring much laughter to me and mine time and time again.
I believe they got a bad rap cause yah it went over budget god forbid, but specifically went over budget with a WOMAN at the helm. Gods teeth! Can't have THAT.
We've combed "record" stores all over and everywhere we travel hoping to find the soundtrack. We have the gilded VHS but one would dearly love the record. Paul Williams (and help) out did himself.
sigh
Oh and ps? DZ? I'm sure you'd know all about Ishtar being a misfire and all, cause you were there....right?..on set and shit? The entire shoot?
