Apologies

I have to leave to do a Girl With The Dragon Tattoo interview and then a screening of Kevin Smith’s Cop Out. Apologies for the black-blanket effect that the Crazy Heart skin ad has been having on some browsers. It’s fine on Firefox and Safari but apparently Internet Explorer users have had difficulty. Is this pretty much the case?

  2. Fine on Firefox. On IE, it covers the top two or three threads on the home page; If you manage to be able to click on a Read More or Comments, when you get to THAT page, the top third (ie, your writing) is covered in black, and only the bottom comments are visible.

Clicking on anything near the top of the pages directs you to Fox Searchlight.

  4. Bridges hair in Crazy Heart was almost another character unto itself.

I’m so jealous cause I just turned 30 and am headed toward a George Costanza hairline.

  6. I’m curious to read Wells’ reaction to Cop Out. Owen Gleiberman gave it a C- on ew.com and Kevin Smith went ape shit in the comments section.

  8. Fucking lame that Smith is still doing that shit. He claimed that he no longer cared about reviews. Lost a lot of respect for him after what he pulled on Joel Siegel.

  10. If that IS Kevin Smith then he’s a fucking tool. Especially since he mentioned James Cameron and Smurfs in the same sentence.

I got as much of a kick out of Clerks as anyone else my age did at the time, but the rest of his filmography is a disaster.

  12. I’m confused. Kevin Smith should be writing and having someone else directing. This is like Pete Townsend doing an album of Roger Daltrey songs.

  14. it’s got a 31 on Metacritic at the moment — but jeezus, when did Metacritic add Rex Reed to their mix? Will they start factoring-in Armond White too?

  18. Amen @ Prager #15.

    Great analogy, as well.

Smith can still write, he just needs a dry director to complement his “wacky” writing.

As for who that would be, I’m not exactly sure. Not a whole lot of “subtle” comedy going on at the moment…

  20. All fine here in Safariland Mr. Wells, the occasional crash of course. I read GWTDT last Summer and it could definitely benefit from the whittling down process of being made into a movie. Big Hair Rules!!

  22. I just read Smith’s comments over at EW, and yikes. He comes off so desperate that you almost feel bad for the guy, or at least embarrassed. Granted, Smith has never pretended to be a professional and has admitted to being an attention-seeking fame whore, but still. That was cringe-inducing.

  24. There are few talkback-related pleasures in the world that measure up to watching Kevin Smith get sand in his vagina over any perceived slight. Owen basically gives him a “can’t win ‘em all….you’ll get the next one, tiger!”, and Smith loses his fucking MIND. I really hope Wells pans this so we can get a Kevin Smith meltdown in here.

  26. For the last couple of days when I was using IE at work and would click on a post in Google Reader to go read the whole post the Crazy Heart ad would basically take over my whole screen. I didn’t have any issues reading your site at home in Firefox. I’ll have to check IE again tomorrow when I go back to work.

  27. If I was Kevin Smith– hell, if I was Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Woody Allen or Michael Mann– I would spend every free fucking second of my life on this blog, Poland’s blog, every negative review’s feedback section, and even the IMDB message boards getting in flame wars with any- and everyone who didn’t like my movie.

I’d like to think I’d have better things to do, but face it, I’d take even the mildest pan or snarky comment as some declaration of war and browbeat anyone with a dissenting opinion.

So if it is Smith (it’s surely not), I wouldn’t blame him. It SUCKS to be not liked. I won’t spend a happy day until each and every person on this planet likes me. Or at least until K-Stew or Jena Malone likes me.

  28. If that IS Kevin Smith then he’s a fucking tool. Especially since he mentioned James Cameron and Smurfs in the same sentence.

I got as much of a kick out of Clerks as anyone else my age did at the time, but the rest of his filmography is a disaster.

  29. FMS – When it’s the real Kevin Smith, he’ll post on his own web board “Yes it’s me”, and then link that directly from the comments thread, as opposed to writing “Yes it’s me” and then linking to the webboard posts that the real Kevin Smith has made, with no actual connection between the two.

It’s not at all hard to say that it definitely isn’t real.

  30. Here’s how I know it isn’t Smith:

I saw “Cop Out” tonight, and I would bet any amount of money that Smith himself doesn’t like this movie. It’s so completely counter to his sensibility and type of humor, that I’m sure he couldn’t wait to be off the set daily.

  31. “Every sperm is sacred for Mormons, too, it seems…But apparently not the women who give birth.”

You know, you don’t *have* to make the headline wacky. You could choose to show a modicum of respect for a story like that. But I suppose that you’d have to have basic human decency for that, and that’s asking a lot in this case.

  32. DZ, did your schools not teach you the basics in logic? If you make a statement and someone proves you wrong, don’t defend yourself by giving an irrelevant response. It doesn’t matter how long Defendor might play. The movie is not going direct to video. End of story. Say “Sorry. My mistake.” and move on.

  33. Thread’s all over the place, so time to YEP YEP. Apologies in advance:

I was TWEETING about this the other day, but it boggles my mind that you guys get to make a living seeing movies; I know that it isn’t especially lucrative for most, and I will concede that Poland offered me some great opportunities to get in the game for real, and I sort of balked and chickened out, falling back on my shitty day job of QCing pornography and looking at Randy Spears’ balls 10 hours a day. It is a truly, TRULY dispiriting life to have to endure such things.

But you guys get to see all this stuff early, and presumably with other critics… I’m not HUGE on the idea that at critic screenings everybody’s chicken-scratching in their notepad at key moments, or that they leave the lights up so you can do so. And I don’t understand why critics prefer to sit in the very back, with that intellectual distance complemented by the geographical remove from the screen.

But still, I’m on Twitter most of the day, and somehow (NOT DISSING THESE PEOPLE AT ALL, I like them a lot) Drew and Jen Yamato and Massawyrm and Beaks and Ryan Stewart and Luke Thompson, their day consists of GOING TO MOVIES. They’re not doing transcription, they’re not encoding subtitles, they’re not clearing up mosquito noise on the telecine. And at no point do they have to worry, “Hey if I don’t see BIG NEW MOVIE at the 11:40 show tomorrow, I’m going to have to QC the last 11 minutes of it at work going through it frame by frame.”

I’m not saying I’m smarter than anyone or even worthy of the aforementioned company, but I have a somewhat unique take on film and more than a few followers who enjoy my shtick (and many more who do not.)

How come I’m rocking the patch day 70 hours a week to make my 1.5K a month rent when I could be watching BROOKLYN’S FINEST today or rolling with McWeeny at that CHLOE screening?

Like, Jen Yamato has apparently already seen Brooklyn’s Finest; Can you HONESTLY think of one person in the movie-blog/film geek world MORE WORTHY OF SEEING BROOKLYN’S FINEST early than LexG? That movie looks like my DREAMS writ large… Yet I gotta wait til opening day, or more likely Sunday afternoon because I have to work.

I don’t REALLY want to be a critic, I want to be an ACTOR, but until I can make a living from ACTING (which given my weight and baldness, is probably next never), how can I make 50k, 60k from just reviewing movies? Poland seemed to be hinting that I could go to junkets and stuff and MEET THE STARS, but if I’m not meeting Megan Fox on EQUAL TERMS, I don’t want to just be a Byron Allen esque stop on her publicity tour. I want to DATE HER.

Maybe I should put out a COFFEE TABLE book of my musings.

People tell me to start a blog of my own, but TypePad is confusing, and if I give them my credit card info this LexG nonsense will follow me around the rest of my life and I’ll never get to be president because of some dumb shit I said to leahnz on MCN in 2007.

  34. “Being released on DVD only two monhs after playing in one city sounds like DTV to me. ”

DZ – you should know that, legally speaking, you’re libelling a production company. And this is a website where everybody knows your full name and the basic area in which you live.

If they’re releasing this movie into one theatre two months before they release it on DVD, there’s a reason — they have a contractual obligation. I know, you’re stupid, so I’ll explain further — they pre-sell foreign territories based on “this will play theatrically in the USA.”

So, in a very real way, the lie that you are spreading (and refusing to back down from) is libellous. You’re publicly accusing them of violating the terms of their international contracts, a very serious crime. Are you sure you want to continue down that path, or do you maybe think this would be a good time to shut the fuck up?

  35. Abe: That’s not a premiere. That’s a “slip it in, because it’s a slow weekend” type of thing.

Gordon: “You’re publicly accusing them of violating the terms of their international contracts, a very serious crime.”

That’s bullshit. I did not comment on how they were handling the fucker internationally, just domestically. Hell, it’s not even on http://www.boxofficemojo.com/counts/chart/?yr=2010&wk=09&p=.htm ‘s radar. Are they gonna get sued for it, too?

  36. But ok, since I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one, I’ll retract my prior comments about Defendor’s status only for the sake of avoiding legal problems.

  37. “I did not comment on how they were handling the fucker internationally, just domestically.”

Right, you stated something untrue, and then it was pointed out that it was untrue, and you stuck you your comment on their domestic release, despite knowing it to be untrue.

If you can point to Box Office Mojo saying that it was going direct-to-video (or, even better, saying that getting a theatrical release didn’t count as not being direct to video), they’d probably be in legal trouble, yeah, but I’d bet that, when the company releases the gross information, BOM will list its theatrical gross, and you’ll claim that it doesn’t count and the movie was still direct-to-video.

  38. Gordn, your last point isn’t 100% true. There have been plenty of movies released on one screen in Los Angeles, including one released two months ago featuring a multiple-Oscar winning actor/producer/director, which never report grosses. But even if Defendor does not report grosses, it still doesn’t change the fact that it is not direct to video, since it also opened in several cities in Canada last week, and Canadian grosses are more often than not folded in to the American grosses, even if the Canadian distributor and the American distributor are different companies, which in Defendor’s case is not the case.

Hell, no matter how good or bad Defendor does this weekend, I’m going to ask my booker to get me a copy for next weekend, just to prove DZ even more wrong.

  39. Well, sure, that makes sense. But, in my defense, if the company didn’t release the grosses to anybody, they wouldn’t have much cause for complaint that Box Office Mojo didn’t report them…

  40. Thanks for sharing the information dude. I found the information very helpful. That’s a awesome article you posted. I will come back to read some more.

  42. Awesome concept. I know a buddy of mine makes use of templates. This stuff is great for if you append rows to a grid or list.

Also, it would probably be great for having some sort of “viewer”. You could have a list of documents, and use jQuery to get JSON data, then put the data into the template. Something like viewing invoices or other formatted docs.

Just to be picky too, according to w3schools.com, the “value” tag is deprecated? But I guess it is still technically valid. I like to be “valid” when I can :)
