A portion of last Wednesday’s chat with Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev covered his not having directed the two sequels — The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. Both were directed by Daniel Alfredson.
As I mentioned during our chat, Oplev’s reason for declining to helm these films (or at least the one he shared) sounds similar to Catherine Hardwicke‘s reason for not wanting to direct New Moon. He basically felt that the second two books (or did he mean the second two scripts) had a rushed, slapdash quality — less emotionally grounded, more plotty-for-plot’s-sake, etc.
Agreed about the second book. Defintely not as good as the first. Talky, with an overly cute plot. Loved the first one in the series (http://timqueeney.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/what-element-drives-a-thriller/). Haven’t read the third yet.

I thought the first movie was a bit plotty for plottiness’ sake. The second one must be loopy.
One thing that also really bugged me about the movie was the subplot about rape revenge. I know they were going for gritty and hard core and bla bla bla. But it was overly brutal and harsh and had no place in a silly, kinda straight entertainment.
Everone’s going crazy over the girl character. But I felt the “she has Asberger’s” thing was a cheap excuse not to develop her into a fully realized character or explain the random things she does.
Hey, sue me but I liked the second film more than the first. It’s closer to a Charles Bronson/Chuck Norris type B movie than the Da Vinci Code template and I appreciated the grittiness.
I wasn’t all that thrilled with the first film. Agree on the rape stuff but also think it was too “Hollywood.” Whoever said it was to it’s genre what “Let the Right One” was needs to get their head examined.

The fun thing is that Hardwicke’s Twilight was a complete disaster while New Moon was a competent adaptation of equally disastrous source material. I know you really liked the tone of the first film, but really, thank atheismo that she didn’t direct it.
