Begs To Differ
HE reader and Tim Burton buff Michael Mayo saw Alice in Wonderland last Thursday at Hollywood’s El Capitan, and, contrary to yesterday’s general opinion, was not only okay with it but actually feels it’s “Tim’s best work in a long time.” Perhaps with a pinch of salt…?
“It’s actually more somber than they’re letting on,” he says. “The setup is that Alice (Mia Wasikowska) comes back as a young adult and finds the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) has taken over and is causing a “reign of terror,” etc. Part of Wonderland has dense vegitation and forests like Pandora, but part of it is scorched and spooky from where the Red Queen had the dragon-like Jabberwock (Christopher Lee) attack.
Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter with a soft Scottish accent and is his usual amazing self, making Willy Wonka seem almost normal. (Depp actually recites part of the film, and is wonderful while doing so.) Crispin Glover is actually in the film a good deal as the Red Queen’s consort, reminding me Prince Caspian’s evil brother. Wasikowska is rather good — she reminds me of a young Gwynneth Paltrow. As a cat person you’re going to love the silky, Stephen Fry-voiced Cheshire Cat, who has a larger role in this than the original.
:They’ve also set it up for a sequel, if it does well enough. The CGI is not as good as Avatar‘s, but then nothing will match that film’s visual wonders for a long time. But the design is very handsome and captivating. The 3D looks good, but it’s a little hard to tell because they had all the center seats blocked off for the VIPs so us proles got put on the hard-angled sides where it might not have been as effective. You know the El Capitan — if you’re not in the center, you’re screwed.
“The only qualm I have is that, paradoxically, aside from his usual weird design, this feels less personal than a Burton film. It is far more visually straightforward and almost workmanlike film than Burton’s last few films; parts of it feel like they could have been done by almost any competent director (although this probably wouldn’t have resulted in the same type of performance from Depp.)
“I’m going to be very curious to see how it plays with the public, but I think it will be a hit so I’m not quite sure why they’re keeping the lid on.
How bizarre that of all people, Tim Burton has become something of the auteur equivalent of a hack, wasting his/our time remaking properties that don’t need to be remade (Apes, Charlie, this) with the occasional inspired detour back to darkness (Sleepy Hollow, Todd). I suppose there’s something to be said for putting your stamp on what are essentially soulless studio paychecks, but man do I hate most of his ’00 output, “Todd” aside. And even that was another adaptation.

I wholeheartedly support Mayo’s view of the film. Probably Burton’s most mature work but also far less macabre and twisted than one would expect. But it is PG, after all. The characters are where the real dimension lies, not the stuff that pops out and that is all for the good. For once, Alice might be the most interesting being on the screen. And that is quite the accomplishment.

More mature than “Mars Attacks?”
Just kidding. But mature like “Ed Wood” or mature like “Big Fish”? Because the latter was “mature” like a mawkish Hallmark card.

Except in this version, Alice is a dour, friendless goth-girl who wears black all the time until she falls in with and finds comfort in
the fellow misfits of Wonderland.

Maturity is overrated anyhow. It implies the restraint of one’s natural and oft hedonistic impulses. The Straight Story is Lynch’s most “mature” flick per Variety. Why? Because he pulled back on many of the elements that make Lynch special. Is that good?
If I’m going to see the most mature Burton film ever, then I at least hope it follows a small story similar to the Straight Story or Ed Wood. I have little interest in seeing a mature version of Alice in Wonderland.
I think the real problem w/ Burton the last decade is that he and his team, unlike Cameron e.g., are visually tapped out. It’s like he’s created his own world, and continues to set visual stories in it. Only the world is too static, and we’ve all gotten a little tired of the weather there.

By mature I don’t mean boring. It seems to be a complete whole, not a series of great moments — the day-o sing-along in Beetlejuice, Large Marge, the Oompah Loompah musical extravaganzas — in search of a completely satisfying movie framework with a beginning, middle and end.

I can’t trust this review mostly because of the last bit “The only qualm I have is that, paradoxically, aside from his usual weird design, this feels less personal than a Burton film. It is far more visually straightforward and almost workmanlike film than Burton’s last few films”
Seriously, what was the last good Tim Burton film? All of his films in the last 10 years have been incredibly impersonal with the exception of Big Fish which just wasn’t very good. This is just another step in the wrong direction for him. It will definitely be a hit for no other reason than the the title and his own franchise “A Tim Burton Film”.
Also any comparison to Avatar is ridiculous and a reference to Prince Caspian proves this opinion is not for me.

I just hope there’s really loud, shrill, extrusive, over-orchestrated Danny Elfman music blaring throughout.

Wow, lots of hate for Tim Burton on this (or just about any Burton/Alice-related) thread. I wonder if some of it has to do with age — if a lot of you, like me, were kids-into-teenagers when Burton was at what’s generally considered his peak, and now his movies don’t recapture that childhood magic for you, or you’re faintly-to-quite sheepsih over digging the fairy-tale goth vibe so hard back then (I know I did). That’s probably unfair since I’m sure some of you legitimately dislike his movies, but I find some of the criticisms lobbed his way a bit strange. Particularly the idea that he’s become some hack who only does adaptations. Burton has never really been a fountain of wonderful new characters; it’s just that the few times he has worked with an original concept (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas), he’s done really well. But the vast majority of his filmography is a Burton spin on a character or story with some degree of familiarity: Pee-Wee Herman existed before Burton; there’s Batman from the comic books; Ed Wood from real life; Mars Attacks from bubblegum cards; and so on and so on. Adaptation is not something he suddenly got into for Planet of the Apes. Of course I’d be excited to see him create a new character again (especially if it’s not something from his archives, like Frankenweenie) but Burton has always been interested in putting his own personal spin on some kind of pre-existing myth or pop-cultural artifact. No one should be surprised by this.
I’m also surprised by the level of indifference/hostility toward his ’00s output. Planet of the Apes, obviously, doesn’t work very well, although it’s not unwatchable, just kinda pedestrian. But Big Fish is a lovely and underappreciated film that uses bits of his signature visual style while still representing some narrative departures (and interesting meta-commentary on Burton’s own interest in fables and tall tales). Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is better than the soft-focus Willy Wonka version (Wilder is great in that movie, but the rest of it, not so much) — maybe a little easy for Burton, sure, but also a lot more psychedlic and playful than his “pale sad goth” rep would have you believe. And if you want cute-goth-lite, Corpse Bride is an amusing trifle. Sweeney Todd is a highly enjoyable adaptation of the musical with a surprisingly understated Depp performance. I’d rate all three of his last movies higher than the original Batman (though Batman Returns is one of his best), and I think I prefer Sweeney and Big Fish to Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands.
I don’t know what to make of Alice — the trailers look fun but maybe a touch over-processed with all of the amimation and distortion. And it does touch upon my only problem with Burton: that sometimes it seems like he’s going for material that so closely fits his sensibility that doing a whole movie feels a little redundant. Something smaller and more genuinely offbeat, like Ed Wood, would certainly be exciting. But I don’t particularly want Burton conducting experiments in austerity.

I used to love Tim Burton. At 26 years old now I still very much enjoy Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and the first two Batman movies.
I am very disappointed in the turn his career took from there. Big Fish and Sweeney Todd were good but he has yet to create anything that comes close to his earlier works.

“Sweeny Todd is an enjoyable adaptation of the musical” – really? Are you serious? I mean, they cut out the title song! And reduced London to a few blocks. But, if you have never seen a full-scale production of the stage version, you might buy it. But there’s no way anyone can make excuses for the god-awful singing of Bonham-Carter and Depp – no musical has had singing this bad since “Paint Your Wagon” (Clint Eastwood/Lee Marvin sing!0

The odd thing is that the original texts defy adaptation, to a certain extent. There is no real plot, per se. They’re basically just Alice wandering around Wonderland interacting with a bunch of extremely odd characters.
As a result, I always thought the cartoon adaptation was one of the weakest of the original Disney canon. It’s well animated, but it never takes the required step into outright madness.
Hence, I was encouraged when I heard this film is a “return to Wonderland.” But I guess there’s a danger in attempting to impose some linear order on something that isn’t meant to have it.
That said, Burton’s designs do look pretty great, so I’ll see it for that alone.

jimtheindiefilmmaker, I actually saw the last Broadway revival before Burton’s film — in 2005 or 2006, I think, and loved it, and still really liked Burton’s version, picked up the DVD even. To your points:
-Does the original stage version have a more epic feel? Because the one I saw — it was the production where the orchestra was on stage — wasn’t exactly expansive. Sort of minimalist, actually, and they did it beautifully, but it didn’t make me anticipate a wide-reaching view of London. Also, I dug how Burton made the film cinematic without trying too hard to “open it up” by throwing in a bunch of superfluous vistas.
-I’m fine with Depp’s singing, maybe because I’m no kind of musical theater expert, or maybe because I’d rather have an actor who isn’t the best singer as opposed to a singer trying to act. (Obviously there are Broadway people who can do both, but that’s not going to be the direction the movie version goes in.) I wouldn’t buy the soundtrack or anything, but then again, the music of Sweeney Todd is more operatic than tuneful, so it’s not necessarily what I’d want to listen to outside the show or film anyway.
Really, ST is one of the best musicals of this past decade, especially if you’re looking at big-studio Broadway adaptations. Dreamgirls, Rent, The Producers, Mamma Mia, Nine, Chicago… I’d rate the best of those, Dreamgirls, as pretty decent; Todd beats ‘em all for acting, visuals, and pretty much anything but dancing, and I don’t care about dancing. Moulin Rouge is better, definitely, and I like the indie-musical vibes of Once and Dancer in the Dark, but Burton actually went and made a big musical, which the likes of Spielberg (who I also find underrated; just sick of his between-project dilly-dallying) and Woo and Soderbergh and so many others have said they want to do.

The chief music critic for the New York Times loved Depp’s singing and performance in Sweeney Todd. He also reviews opera and is a big Sondheim fan. http://movies.nytimes.com/2008/01/12/arts/music/12depp.html
Sondheim has also repeatedly said he was very happy with the movie version:
“”You know, I thought of ‘Sweeney’ originally as an intimate piece, but Hal (director Harold Prince) refused to do the original show without making it big.”
Tim Burton’s recent “Sweeney Todd” film, with a singing Johnny Depp as the “demon barber of Fleet Street” also gets high marks from Sondheim.
“I think it’s the one movie (based on my shows) that worked, because Tim made it a film, not a recording of a stage musical.
“I’m very opinionated about movie musicals, when they’re adapted from live shows,” he continued. “You’ll sit still for a three-minute song in a theater. But in movies, a glance from someone’s eyes will tell you the whole story in a few seconds.”"

The George Hearn/Angela Lansbury Broadway version of Sweeney Todd is on youtube, so anyone can compare the movie version to it. There are also snippets of Len Cariou’s performance as Sweeney on youtube. I don’t know why nobody mentions that Lansbury had a Cockney accent in both versions and Cariou and Hearn both had American accents, which doesn’t seem too evocative of London to me. Also, Hearn is pretty hammy.

Burton hasn’t made a great film since SLEEPY HALLOW, which like SHUTTER ISLAND was homage to HAMMER & RKO noir films. Since then however he’s changed his producing partner, bedded himself with Carter and frankly has run out of ideas and relies too heavily on shoddy CGI. Its sound cliche or snobbish to say but its true, all he brings to movies nowadays is crooked trees. I would love to see Burton reemerge from this comatose state but it’s unlikely, SWEENEY showed some sign of life but ALICE looks like we’ve fallen back down in the hole. Zanuck has his ear and is pushing his superficial “goth” status to tweens, who knows when the real Burton may return.

I love that DeeZee actually responded to someone who threatened to sodomize him with hedgeclippers. In DeeZee’s world, everyone really appreciates his unsolicited link bukkake, if they protest, it is really just because they love him, kind of like when little boys pick on the little girls they are smitten with. Such a lack of self-awareness is probably celebrated on some planet in the universe.

I know no one is still reading this, but the British press reviews are starting to come in, and, so far, the Times review is rapturous and the Guardian review is guardedly optimistic. So much for this supposed disaster, Wells. When will you expose who your lying source was in that unfortunate previous post?
