From Time Out New York's David Fear, Joshua Rothkopf and Keith Uhlich, a list of the 50 Most Deserving Oscar Winners of All Time. The cinematography for Barry Lyndon, Days of Heaven and The Third Man. The musical score for The Sting. Humphrey Bogart 's performance in The African Queen and Robert De Niro's in Raging Bull. The editing for The French Coonnection. The sound for The Exorcist and Apocalypse Now.

I'm not much of a list guy, but this one's actually pretty good. I would have also included Frederic March's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a delightful exercise in pre-code nastiness, but to each his own, I guess.

Somewhat token inclusion of the first half or so of film history. Here are some I would add from before 1950:
Rosher and Struss, cinematography, Sunrise
All Quiet on the Western Front, Best Picture
The Music Box, short
Lee Garmes, cinematography, Shanghai Express
Frank Capra, director, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
Hal Mohr, cinematography, A Midsummer Night's Dream
Erich Wolfgang Korngold, score, The Adventures of Robin Hood
Arlen/Harburg, song, "Over the Rainbow" (Wizard of Oz)
James Cagney, actor, Yankee Doodle Dandy
Epstein/Epstein/Furthman, screenplay, Casablanca
Alfred Newman, score, The Song of Bernadette
The True Glory, documentary feature
Clemence Dane, original story, Vacation From Marriage
Shoeshine, special award, outstanding foreign language film
Hein Heckroth, art direction, The Red Shoes
Oiivia deHavilland, actress, The Heiress
Dean Jagger, supporting actor, Twelve O'Clock High

I'd agree with the Bogart win as deserving, but not more deserving than his competition, Brando in Streetcar.

One that seems out of place: Scorsese for The Departed...doesn't seem to belong on this list.
Pretty interesting list otherwise. From the last decade, I would include Marion Cotillard's performance in La Vie En Rose...

Meh, I'm not all that into the score for George Roy Hill's "The Sting," and I've never been into "The African Queen". I like my Humphrey Bogart cynical and stoic and gritty - plus his Babe Ruth hat ruins it for me.
And Rich S. is on to something. Rouben Mamoulian's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a freakin' great film and Frederic March (not to mention Miriam Hopkins) is great in it.

Most deserved Oscar without question went to Andrea Arnold for Wasp, 2004 Best Live Action Short. (Sorry, just wanted to write something snobby.)
Deserved is so subjective, but the two that made me smile widest while watching live was Babe for visual effects and Once for song.

I have to disagree with McFirbank on that Erich Wolfgang Korngold win for Robin Hood. Louis SIlvers score for Suez blows that away. Sorry. And Dean Jagger over Arthur Kennedy? Give me a fucking break!

The Sting won for Best Score? Nothing against Hamlisch, but winning on the strength of a bunch of Joplin cues that weren't even written for the film doesn't seem all that impressive of a feat. It's particularly telling that "Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation" isn't even its own category now. There was a separate "Original Dramatic Score" category that year, and of course now we have all these crazy score rules that seem to unfairly keep some scores out and unfairly anoint others.

I think it was a good win. It defined the sound of the film in an inescapable way, and it was a huge pop culture presence as a sound for years after that. I know it's not an "original" score, but when you can play a few bars and say, hey, it's the music from The Sting, you've done a masterful job of matching the right sound to the right story. That may not be valued now, but *I* value it.

Ponderer >> I'm not saying there isn't any value in it. But rewarding it with an Oscar - and then deeming that one of the most deserved Oscars ever - just seems like an extreme stretch to me.

It's the best movie I've seen since THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS WAY BACK IN 1991. One of the most moving films ever.

Agreed. But I was impressed at the conclusion of All That Jazz's editing, which I probably wouldn't have thought about (weird, as it's one of my all-time favorites).
I'd have to throw in DDL for There Will Be Blood, Bill Conti's The Right Stuff score, and Kevin Kline for A Fish Called Wanda.

I wonder if the Jeffster would feel the same about Polanski if it was his 13 year old son's anus dripping with Roman's cum. "Jett, think of the great movies he's made, you just can't press charges. Anyway, if Polanski pays enough I can finally buy those movie stills of naked Vinessa Shaw"

I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, and so I ask you to confirm me as your President with your prayers. And I hope that such prayers will also be the first of many. If you have not chosen me by secret ballot, neither have I gained office by any secret promises. I have not campaigned either for the Presidency or the Vice Presidency. I have not subscribed to any partisan platform. I am indebted to no man, and only to one woman -- my dear wife -- as I begin this very difficult job.cheap tiffany co jewelry
