Drop It Already

How many years has the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges movie been in preparation? Since at least 2004, which is when the New Yorker's Ian Parker wrote about the project as well as the Farrelly's hope that they might get Russell Crowe to portray Moe. The project is cursed. The only thing that can save it is Mel Gibson signing on.

Not as cursed as Jodie Foster's Flora Plum.

This thing will never happen, at least not with the Farrelly's directing. Not unless they make a commercial hit.

Mel wouldn't help. This never made sense to me. The Stooges themselves were much better in their shorts than their feature films. Best in short bursts.

Noah Cross makes a good point. What the Farrellys need to do is make a movie about abortive attempts to make a Three Stooges movie, with a few skits thrown in.

I'd much rather see Foster's Flora Plum or Gilliam's Man of La Mancha. I don't know why anyone would want to see the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges, even with Russell or Mel.

Re drbob's comment:
Read recently that Gilliam wants to reactivate LA MANCHA with Robert Duvall.

Saw Gilliam speak a few months back, and he said La Mancha is gearing up to go again.

Terry, I now have (perhaps an irrational) fear for Duvall's safety now.

as much as I hate this entire concept, the simple fact is that alleged progress on the movie helped get Sony to finally properly release the Stooges shorts with new high def transfers, in order and at a reasonable price. All that's left is the final volume filled with fake Shemps and Joe Besser.

This falls into the same boat as other craptacular remakes that allow film fans to get good DVDs/Blu-rays of the original.

I said it before and I will say it again...you can't have a Stooges movie unless Shemp is in it! You can have Curly, then Shemp later in the movie.

Jeff, Mel Gibson already HAS made a Stooges movie: He produced the ABC TVM about the Stooges starring Michael Chiklis that aired sometime around 2000 or 2001.

I'm a Stooges fan, and I've read the Farrelly's Brother's script for THE THREE STOOGES and it's pretty damn funny. Two or three laughs on every page.

That's at least for the first forty pages - when the Stooges are children in an orphanage. The bits are slapstick heaven. Every slap, head knock, and pratfall are very funny, not to mention what they do to those poor nuns that run the place. Priceless.

They we get the second part of the script, where the Stooges are older and leave the orphanage. And the jokes start to repeat themselves. Slap, knock, slip etc. It gets old real fast and the film suffers because of it

I guess that's why the Stooges shorts were two-reelers. Twenty minutes of slapping, poking and pratfalling was the right length for their style of comedy..

I got a bit interested in this when Penn signed back on as Larry.

Movie Watcher: You're right, but... Shemp first, then Curly, then Shemp returns when Curly has his stroke.
