If You Please…
Peter van Aftmael‘s snap of Jeff Bridges signing autographs outside the Santa Monica American Cinematheque — dated 1.16.10 — is easily the best shot in the N.Y. Times’ Sunday Magazine‘s 7th annual tribute to great performers. The Times web guys don’t allow you to save the image (typical) so Alexander Carter sent me a decent scan.
Just print screen and paste it into Photoshop or Paint or whatever. That’s a bingo.

Lot of good pics in there, but how did they turn a goddess like Abby Cornish into a more nondescript, sleepier Diane Krall?
And what’s with the kankles?
(The equally-smoking Mulligan and Blunt were shot rather indifferently too.)

I’ve still never seen Star Man. It’s on Blu-ray for cheap now, I might just go order it.

Starman is great… Try to avoid the standard DVD, which for some insane reason is full-frame; Sony put it out as a flipper in the early days of DVD, then somewhere along the way it became one of those popular library titles where for some INSANE reason they stopped offering the widescreen side (see also, The Deep, Last Action Hero, Geronimo, The Toy, etc.)

I think only the Bruin is worse than the Aero when it comes to single screens in LA. You’re so effed if a big person gets in front of you.
And never seen STARMAN? How are you even allowed on this blog?
“Do you seriously expect me to tell the President that an alien has landed, assumed the identity of a dead housepainter from Madison, Wisconsin and is presently out tooling around the countryside in a hopped up orange and black 1977 Mustang? ”
Jack Nitzsche’s score was the first thing I ever heard on compact disc and is pretty terrific beyond that bit of DTG trivia.

This is going to sound a little weird, but I have to say it.
Those NYTimes photographers take much better pictures of men than women.

Love the Bridges pics. The ret were mostly meh. my fave was the costume test shot fro TRUE GRIT.
Really impressed didn’t post about the pic he obviously wanted to. See if that restraint holds.

Perhaps knowing Bridges is probably one of the best “amateur” shutterbugs out there caused the Times guy to raise his game.

I wish I had the time to go down to the Aero, but the Nuart’s already a pain to make nowadays…

I can afford a bus, but you gotta plan this shit in advance nowadays, because the traffic’s a fucking nightmare in that direction.

Gotta back the Deezer on that one.
Few things are more soul-crushing than trying to get from Hollywood to the West Side for a 7:00 movie…. particularly during the week. Ugh.
That’s why I’ve often wondered why somebody didn’t / doesn’t turn the otherwise-circling-the-drain Showcase theater on LaBrea and turn it into something of a Nuart East.

i think jeff has a mac. hold down apple key ⌘ + shift + 4 to capture a certain area of your screen. a cropping tool will appear and you can select the whatever part of the screen you want to capture…

see also also ‘Sweet and Lowdown’, which I just saw in a store and hesitated, because I wasn’t sure if the box was accurately updated by Sony. Turns out it was, but they sold it by the time I got back to the store.
But what I was gonna say is, the region 2 disc (I believe mine is British) has a commentary by Carpenter and Bridges. ‘They Live’ and “Prince of Darkness’ also have exclusive R2 commentary tracks with Carpenter and the lead actor (unless they’ve been released here recently).
