Just Shy of $700 Million
Three reactions to the weekend’s box-office tallies: (a) Shutter Island began the weekend with $14 million earned on Friday, but it was down to $10,792,000 — a 34% drop — on Sunday, which of course is due to word-of-mouth and grumbling about that Marshall Fine guy leading us astray; (b) Public opinion also resulted in The Wolfman earnings plummeting 76% from last weekend; (c) Avatar’s domestic cume now stands at $687,851,000 – only $13 million shy of the $700 million mark.
I have to see Avatar in IMAX3-D one more time before it gets pushed out by Alice in Wonderland. It’ll be viewable in other 3D formats down the road, of course. Cameron reminded me during the Santa Barbara Film Festival that there are now stereoscopic 3D laptops hitting the market, and of course we’re seeing more and more displays of 3D flatscreens. But I can’t imagine the IMAX 3D presentation I saw last December at Lincoln Square being topped by anything. One last time, one last time…
I was home for a weekend, and went to see it a second time with my folks. Somebody pulled the fire alarm about 40 minutes in, and they said that they couldn’t stop or rewind the film. So they refunded the money, and my parents went to another theater, but I couldn’t sit through the first 40 minutes *again*, so I skipped it.

Avatar, best picture or not … even if it loses, it will be remembered forever unlike the best picture winner (if not Avatar).

I wouldn’t put money on the phrase “Marshall Fine led us astray” crossing anybody’s lips this past weekend.
But I would put money on Avatar, at some point in time, coming back to IMAX 3-D screens.

“which of course is due to word-of-mouth and grumbling about that Marshall Fine guy leading us astray…”
Not to mention that guy who led me into believing that “The Taking of Pelham 123″ was better than the original…

Uh, Jeff, Shutter rose 15% from Friday to Saturday, which is good for a thriller on opening weekend. It actually dropped 40% Saturday to Sunday, which is normal.
So that word-of-mouth dog won’t really hunt, at least not yet.

I saw Shutter Island this weekend and must say it was fantastic. The period setting was absolutely splendid. And the feel of the film with its gothic architect and set pieces really made it feel like a throwback film.
2 thumbs up!

“Shutter Island” is basically Marty and Richardson and Schoonmaker firing on all cylinders and working their asses off to compensate for a film that is nothing more than a psychological genre thriller. Its like hooking up a car battery to an alarm clock.
Nevertheless, I found that it outworked its deficiencies and I enjoyed it for its technical amplification. It’s not a minor-masterpiece, as Poland would say, but I didn’t find it to be loathsome claptrap nonsense – okay, maybe a little.

avatar is awful. truly terrible script/acting/directing, etc. i cant believe you like this movie welles. going to see again? come on. get serious. you’ve lost all credibility on this one. to get a sense of how bad the movie is just look at colonel miles played by stephen lang…. what a rich, deep character. so complex. so perfectly realistic.
the movie is so maddeningly simplistic and trivial.

Avatar will be remembered … whether you like it or not, most folks will remember it and say it was great. Fact.
About Shutter Island … a genre film, sure! But to be honest, pulpy stuff is now and should continue to be considered “art” whether or not the artsy-fartsy refuse to admit it.
Shutter Island is a great film, plain and simple.

I don’t agree with Jeff’s take on SHUTTER ISLAND the movie itself, but I do agree word of mouth is probably going to be TERRIBLE…
Scorsese was going for a Kubrick vibe and he got it… via the antsiest multiplex response to what was billed as a mainstream thriller since EYES WIDE SHUT.
During the prolonged, “Pollack and Cruise at a billiards table” Ben Kingsley explanations at the end, you could just feel the energy sapped out of the room… that distinct “The Road” vibe where a crowd thought they were getting a pulpy straightforward flick and instead got something weird and arty and protracted… Friends who saw it at different screenings reported the same thing– lots of groaning, fidgeting, grumbling and bad laughs. Even “The Wolfman” got a smattering of applause at the end the week before… “Shutter Island” just has people bolting for the exits.
Actually, maybe Jeff should jump onboard and champion it now… since it’s frustrating and confounding the Eloi.

I disagree. The film was really good. Groans or not, just like Eyes Wide Shut, it was and is dang good cinema. Maybe not a film for everyone, but no matter … it works and it is good … the very, very, very ending with Rufalo’s little shaking of the head was just great. Lehane’s book is now on my “to read” list.

In Chicago, you usually see most wide releases for 5 bucks after they’ve been out for two entire weeks. I had planned on revisiting Avatar once this was applied, though I’m still waiting going into week 10. (The previous record for program abstinence was 4 weeks by the Dark Knight.) I’m so cheap.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to do this once Kerasotes sells most of its theaters to AMC, unless AMC decides to adopt the Five Buck Club for itself.

I was thinking of Noah Taylor in ‘Vanilla Sky’, but your analogy works better for the film as a whole, I think.

PCP, I agree actually… Loved the movie, and in general love that protracted, methodical, confident vibe SI has going… That last thirty, forty minutes are probably alienating to a lot of people, but I couldn’t get enough of that EWS, Vanilla Sky fever-dream literalized feel… Also reminded me of the lengthened last reel arcs of Minority Report or Inside Man.
But was just saying, for the masses who don’t thrive off of cinema-for-cinema’s sake, probably isn’t their kind of thing.
When did Michelle Williams get so HOT?

I saw Shutter Island in the official NYC Eloi HQ – aka the Regal E-Walk in Times Square. It was Friday night at 8:15, and despite some rowdy teenagers cheering the title card and threatening to make arseholes of themselves, everyone seemed pretty respectful and entertained by the end of it. No groans or laughs – the audience was in absolute stony silence during…
SPOILERS…
… the scene where Leo swims out into the lake to get the kids. A scene which absolutely MADE the film for me – DiCaprio’s best acting ever. Very few actors can pull of that absolute horror without verging into camp. Even when Scorsese cut to an aerial shot and had Leo scream “NOOOOO!” it didn’t come off as cheesy or forced. It was probably the single most harrowing scene I’ve seen in ages.
And Ruffalo’s subtle little head-shake at the end… what a great little touch. You could feel the audience just deflate. There was one audible “Oh no…” – a kind of frustrated, disappointed lament. It was a perfect ending, especially with the ambiguity as to whether he actually had relapsed or whether he just wanted an end to the mental anguish.
It was, like Inglourious Basterds, the kind of film that works for both cinema enthusiasts and Eloi alike.

Lex, you re so right about Michelle Williams. I was watching the film (didn’t bother looking to see who else was in the flick) and was shocked at her. She was a breath of fresh air and fantastic in more than acting too!

One of the best scenes in Shutter Island was the crypt/chapel scene during the hurricane … atmosphere said over and over 20 times …
The ensemble cast of great character actors was excellent too with Patricia Clarkson playing against cast unbelievably. Here’s a former pinup/beauty contest winner who simply disappears in her role.
Whether there is now a backlash to Scorscese or not, his casting and direction still are some of the best.

Michelle Williams has been hot since Dick, any one remember?
And I have seen Avatar five times, now, and the movie kicks ass each time in every format. Stephen Lang is truly the unsung hero of this thing, he is just a blast to watch.

Boomer: They certainly didn’t remember it enough to care about Leo much until now.
China: I remember it in the “It was bloated and hoakey” sense, but do most people who actually liked it(or claimed they liked it, because they wanted to be part of the “cool” crowd) remember it much?

Yes, they do. And when I’m thinking of movies that you pretend to like in order to be “cool”, Titanic is pretty far down the fucking list.

Doesn’t the fact that Dicaprio has never had a movie that successful again disprove your assertion that the movie was only popular because of Dicaprio?
“I remember it in the “It was bloated and hoakey” sense”
I love the way you only remember the movies you hate. I’ve never seen you compare a movie to another movie in a positive way. Even when you compare ‘Avatar’ to anything, it’s Dragonball, which you also didn’t like.
“or claimed they liked it, because they wanted to be part of the “cool” crowd”
Has everybody seen the Troma thing DZ wrote where he talks about how people didn’t like him because he didn’t like Spielberg? He really thinks that there’s some great conspiracy to keep him unpopular based solely on his movie reviews. And, amazingly, won’t listen to any suggestion that his unpopularity has a lot more to do with his terrible personality.

It doesn’t? Then how come Ford did alright with Raiders, but Leo couldn’t sell The Beach?

Nope. Otherwise, all Depp’s movies should be making POTC numbers.

Nope. I’m just not an easy lay when it comes to these things.

So, it seems as if you’re admitting that there is such a thing as a contribution from the “creative” side, not just the actors. Somehow, the writing and directing of the character *does* matter, something you generally tend to pretend *doesn’t* matter. So, there you go, you’re getting better.
“I’ve seen bigger dicks get pretty far up the ladder. Look at Bush. ”
Bush has the sort of personality that people want to get a drink with. You have the sort of personality where people want to buy you a drink, distract you, and then put poison in it. Big difference. Also, you’re significantly less intelligent than Bush. And at least when Bush was living in his parents’ house, they weren’t living there anymore.

It doesn’t matter if the movie panders to the lowest common denominator and just happened to have the “it star” of that particular time to help it sell better. I mean, would Top Gun do very well if Cruise wasn’t in it?

Nope, those tendencies were there from the get-go, and anyone who pulls that type of shit on me usually gets their rocks off on it, anyway. After I am from L.A., a city which managed to con a lot of rich dumb fucks into building McMansions on loose soil near arid vegetation.

Well, so far, I graduated college with a better grade average than him and didn’t knock up any chicks I paid to have an abortion. And I can tell the difference between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.
