Mustard Balloon

Just a reminder that the mustard-background 2010 Oscar Balloon is now up and open for additions and refinements. (Sitting just above the ’09 Balloon.) As things stand now there are 19 films that…well, who knows which will earn Best Picture consideration? But a decent percentage certainly appear formidable. Plus I’ve listed another 17 or 18 that seem to have been made with some degree of X-factor exceptionalism. The game starts now.

I dont know if Duncan Jones, Source Code will be ready for release this year but that has one seriously amazing script. Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan and Jeffrey Wright will all star.

  2. It’s February — does there really have to be another Oscar balloon? Why not just “Most Anticipated of 2010″ or something? Holy shit, it seems like all we ever talk about here anymore is awards. If this is how you play, then I’m with Mo’Nique, fuck the game.

On a serious note, shouldn’t the # directly under the “High Intrigue/Elite Popcorn” read 21 instead of 27? I dunno, maybe my math’s off.

  3. Nearly empty auditoriums at the Arclight all day for YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF.

Apparently America lacks the will to be entertained. Christ, get out there and SUPPORT K-STEW. She’s only more important than anyone on the planet.

    God I love her so.

  4. LexG, the only reason I even knew HANDKERCHIEF was out is because they made a joke about it a few weeks back on 30 ROCK (not at its expense, more as an example of obscurity). That movie have been coming for what seems like 3 years. Fret not. If the Stew picks smart post Bella roles America will come. She’ll be fine.

  5. Just finished reading a Clark Cable biography. For the 1934 Oscars, there were 12 best picture nominees. And back in those days, best actor and actress had only 3 nominees each.

  6. speaking of Ebert, Oprah’s doing a segment on him this Tuesday (3/2) and he will be using his new computer-generated voice (that is supposed to sound just like him) to give his Oscar picks.

  7. The Feb. 25 Hollywood Reporter review by Michael Rechtshaffen of “Alice in Wonderland” calls it “an early, cross-category Oscar contender.” He also says it is “every bit as transporting as that movie about the blue people of Pandora.”

  8. The funny part about The Yellow Handkerchief is that it did come out 15 months ago, just after the release of the first Twilight movie, self-distributed by the filmmakers, in the hopes of picking up some Oscar nominations. Didn’t do shit then either.

  9. This list is not complete without my cell-phone epic Grainy Daze, which will gobble up these awards in a historic fasion. It has a “4 ur consideration”-tag at the very beginning, and we’ve out-Weinsteined the Weinsteins by having the Oscar-campaign in the actual movie, with characters making their case to the camera at the film’s most impressive moments. I’d like to start the film off with a quote from LexG, so Lex, type me up a quote here and you’ll be immortal. M-Ga POWER! BOW!

  10. “t’s February — does there really have to be another Oscar balloon? Why not just “Most Anticipated of 2010″ or something?”

That, plus also, what I really don’t understand is creating the bubble now, in February the year before, then never updating it at all, so that, next January, it looks really ridiculous, like you have no idea what’s going on [since we all know that at least 60% of the Best Picture nominees will be movies people didn't know to look forward to].

  11. Wall Street 2? I don’t recall any precedent for a sequel securing a nomination unless, like The Godfather or Lord of the Rings, the first film received a nomination. I don’t believe Wall Street (1987) qualifies.
