Well, let us thank the folks at the Academy to say absolutely no to this! My folks are in their seventies and such a move would have made them bail quicker than 10 minutes into the telecast for the show.
This show should be for everybody and this “comedian” is way too howard stern like and not for every generation by any means.
And myself, i’d probably not like it either … his act has tired. but that is just my opinion.

Mr. Blue is right. I’m a Cohen fan, most of the time, but he would have ruined everything by coming onstage dressed in leather with a ball gag and whip. Steve Martin’s been the best host of recent years, even better than Billy Crystal (though I know some would cry blasphemy at that statement). Him and Alec together will be comic gold.

there’s no way he would have done that. He knows restraint. I think Bruno (awful) has made you forget that the Ali G show was more verbal. It wasn’t him just doing outlandish physical gags.

Actually after his fiasco with Eminem at that other award show (they are all the same now, aren’t they) he has convinced me he would do something stupid.
I agree with googs. Chances are Cohen would’ve been a good sport, like Rock and Stewart were.
But having the two best SNL hosts is a dream come true. I’m glad they were chosen. And I imagine it’ll be a last hurrah for Baldwin, who’s announced his retirement for acting as soon as his 30 Rock contract expires.

Cohen is funny but unproven. i’m sure the producer’s list included everyone from Sasha B. Cohen to Ian Zierling…Martin and Baldwin are the perfect choices…fast, funny, and self depricating –perfect Oscar company..
They, and the producrs, will be treated like Gods when this year’s Oscar telecast pull in its highest rating in a decade — but we all know it wasn’t because of them…it’s because of Avatar
The problem is that we live in an era that has few opportunities for someone new to “train” to be a great host.
That unique combination of skills are very dependent on being seasoned by years of live performance and a natural quick wit coupled with the added requirement for the Oscars that they also are of a certain stature professionally. Both Cohen and Gervais (and this was Stewart’s problem as well) and just a tad too provincial for such a big league event.
The closest they came was Letterman, but his natural churlishness put too much bite into the usual Hollywood putdowns. Sure, Hope, Carson and Crystal told similar jokes at the Industry’s expense, but underneath it all was the feeling that they also genuinely loved the business. Letterman will always be the admitted outsider.
Even Martin as a certain standoffish-ness (has there ever been a major modern comedian who’s off screen persona is so 180 degrees from his on? I say this having met the man)
This, I suspect, is why everyone hoped Crystal (8 times) would take up Hope’s role (18 times) – the feeling that this was the last chance to have someone with the background to really be great.
I wonder if Alec Baldwin was a choice to go solo and Martin was added as “training wheels” for his first time out.
They should bring Paul Hogan back.
It comes to class … the Oscars are a show of class and certain type of humor is not classy …

Yeah but isn’t it just better when they go out there and just make fun of it? Obviously I don’t want them to completely condemn it but I feel it’s such a self-serious event with Hollywood sucking it’s own dick that the host should take a lot of jabs at it and mock it on some level. Ricky’s Winslet Holocaust joke at the Globes last year is the prime example of what I like to see the host do (even though he wasn’t hosting then). Remember when Sean Penn got all pissed when Chris Rock pretended to not know who Jude Law was? I live for those moments.
Give it to Seacrest. Effortless.

I was impressed by Seacrest a couple of years ago, when he was asking the ATONEMENT stars some questions on the Oscar red carpet. He knew his shit.
I’ve thought for awhile that perhaps Tom Hanks should host the Oscars. I know that perhaps he’s a bit TOO famous and Hollywood-iconish, but that might be why it works. He’d automatically bring a certain class and gravitas to the proceedings simply by being who he is (which would please the “needs to be classy” people), and it would also give a genuinely talented comedic wit a chance to revisit that side of his personality.
The star wattage, the eminent likability, and the lovely twinkle in his eye when he tells a knowing, caustic Hollywood joke would be wonderful, and I bet average audiences would like him in that role.
Not to queer myself but count me as one of the few on Team Seacrest. He’s always relaxed and informative on those award shows, I might even enjoy having a beer with the little fucker.

I actually don’t mind Seacrest either. I think Seacrest-hatred is really knee-jerk and lazy; I’m not saying the guy’s a master wit, raconteur, or intellect, but he’s as professional a host as they come – relaxed, easygoing, personable, affably smart, and smooth as all get-out.
I’ll submit Steve Carell for 2011 hosting consideration.

Didn’t they try to get Dave Chappelle to do it before his meltdown. That would have been interesting.
I’ve always wanted Seinfeld to host. If they ever decided to get rid of all singing and dancing numbers, I wouldn’t mind who hosted. I believe they’re not having any song performances this year, so that’s great. That’s 1 less bathroom break for me.
If ‘Bruno’ had been a ‘Hangover’ level hit, they’d have let Cohen host.
Of course, I don’t know whether Cohen would do it — he doesn’t seem to do huge public appearances out of character.
If Russell Brand can host an awards show, S B-C could have done it, too. The dude’s not an idiot, and any idiot can host an awards show. The challenge would have been that the vast majority of his comedy has been *in character*. Everyone knows him as “Bruno” or “Ali-G” or “Borat,” but S B-C has made a point of rarely letting anyone see the real S B-C. Ergo, he’s screwed himself out of a future, a la Mike Myers.
It does come back to class, and Russell Brand wasn’t classy in his hosting duties, and he’s funnier than S B-C.
