To Live and Die in LA and Assault on Precinct 13 = two of my favorite movies of all time... both just perfect.

And, yeah, Petersen is SO badass, laconic, and (did Ebert make this comparison back in the day?) McQueen-esque in TLDLA and Manhunter that, while I'm glad he finally hit it big with the public and made a fortune off CSI, those two movies are his finest hours. Also, big, big fan of John Pankow's work as his partner... That movie is Friedkin through and through: hopeless, nihilistic, grim, cynical. Not just for what happens to Petersen at the end, but that last scene between Pankow and Darlanne Fluegel? It's like some transgressive, evil passing of the torch that feels so unhealthy and bleak-- again, PURE Hurricane Billy.

AP13: Big fan of this practically my entire life, Carpenter having essentially been "my" version of what Lucas and Spielberg was for most Gen X-ers. Fun trivia: New It Girl Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt) is the daughter of the AWESOME white warlord who shoots the little girl at the ice cream truck (maybe JC's best setpiece ever). He was also the Duke's flamboyant right-hand man in EFNY.

A little disappointed that JW wrote off EFNY so effectively in that thread down below, which I was too late to. It's definitely major Carpenter, though I'll allow it probably means more as a formative classic to kids like me who were 9 or 10 when we first saw it and WORSHIPPED Snake Plissken, whereas a Jeff was probably already a working critic and mature cineaste by that time... but man, every kid I knew used to watch that thing every night on Cinemax... same with The Thing. And of course Halloween. To me, arguing AP13 vs any of those is like splitting hairs, whereas JW makes it sound like AP13 is an untouchable masterpiece put Halloween and The Thing are some beneath-him genre shlock he never paid much mind. Unfortunate, because they're all pretty much perfect movies.

Have to agree that the Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-Ray is quite excellent.

And I have mucho love for Escape from NY. One of Carpenter's more under-rated films (much like BTinLC). As a gamer, I'm indebted to EfNY since I believe there'd be no Metal Gear Solid without Snake Plissken's influence!

Yeah, I couldn't quite believe how generic the trailer for Get Him to the Greek looked. It was essentially two minutes of Jonah Hill getting wasted and high. I hope the finished film is better than that; I was hoping it'd be alright.

I guess they have to market it on Jonah Hill, but hopefully the movie focuses a bit more on Russell Brand. Focusing on Jonah Hill makes it even more like a stupid version of 'My Favorite Year'.

There just weren't too many actually funny lines in it. It was more about how wacky drugs and booze are. Hopefully this was just cut together by some frat boys and the actual movie contains more genuine wit.

Eloi - my hope, like i say, is that the reason for that is that Brand is at his funniest doing long almost stream of consciousness stuff, and has just a funny way with words, but it wouldn't translate well to a trailer.

After all, was he in the trailer for 'Sarah Marshall' at all? I'm assuming there's a shot or two, but I can't recall.

Rich: They just announced an LA Akira 20 years ago, and I don't entirely buy it's gonna happen, even if they're finally bringing names to it. [Unless the Hughes Bros. can actually give us a Watchmen-style epic with a reasonable budget, of course.] My only concern about it is it doesn't end up like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jafd97yJFOI . Actually, though, at this point, I'm more offended that some corporate asshole thinks they can remake Barefoot Gen. As for Yamato, I'll still take that over the live-action Starblazers where the ship ends up being the U.S.S. Arizona. [Assuming Di$ney's still going for that script they talked about on AICN over ten years ago, of course.]

A little bit unhappy which JW written down EFNY therefore correctly as line following, i always appeared to be very overdue to be able to. It really is certainly key Father, even though Cover make it possible for the idea possibly signifies a lot more to be a conformative typical to be able to youngsters for instance me personally which were being ON THE LOOKOUT FOR as well as TWELVE whenever we very first noticed the idea in addition to WORSHIPPED Snake Plissken, in contrast to any Rob appeared to be possibly by now any doing work critic in addition to fully developed cineaste through that period... nonetheless gentleman, just about every baby POST understood helpful to look at which matter every evening about Cinemax... similar with all the Matter. And lastly Halloween. If you ask me, reasoning AP13 compared to virtually any of these is similar to busting hairs, in contrast to JW helps it be appear to be AP13 is definitely unbeatable work of art set Halloween and also the Matter tend to be a good number of beneath-him style shlock this individual in no way paid out considerably thoughts. Regrettable, due to the fact they are almost all essentially excellent motion pictures. setter
