Who Loves Ya?
The usual Peggy Siegal-invited elites attended tonight’s Monkey Bar party to celebrate The Hurt Locker: The Shooting Script (Newmarket Press) — screenplay by Mark Boal, introduction by Kathryn Bigelow. The gathering was hosted by Bigelow and literary agent David Kuhn.

Intrepid N.Y. Times “Carpetbagger” Melena Ryzik, Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow — Tuesday, 2.23, 8:45 pm.

Do me a favor– the next time you run into Kathryn, will you kindly bring up what you think of Douglas Sirk and report back? Thanks.

I don’t understand why they would publish that book this soon before the Oscars; the movie has at least a shot at both Best Screenplay and Best Oscar — surely being able to put that on the cover would help sales?

I hadn’t noticed it before, but Mark Boal is practically a dead ringer for Jason Reitman. If they didn’t part their hair differently, I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart at all.

Is he giving you the finger or is it that just an artistic way to point to the title?

Ok cool. Not trying to be a smartass or anything just curious. As to the second picture, my God! Stunning. Can’t wait to see Bigelow win Best Director. I wish they would hire her for the next Bond. That movie would seriously kick ass with 150-200M for her to put her vision on the screen. Might even make up for the epic failure (artistically not financially) of QOS.

azmoviegoer, I hope that was a typo when you wrote “hard to believe THEY’RE 58 years old” (my caps). Unless you were complimenting a particular paired feature of Ms. Bigelow, which, while potentially true, would be rather crass.

As someone who has admired her since I was a kid…. what makes Bigelow attractive to me is not just the fact that she’s strikingly beautiful, it’s that she has made some of the most solid films in the world of horror/sci-fi (not to forget the very underrated Blue Steel).
“The Hurt Locker” is the icing.
I honestly hope she gets it.
It is deserved.

The funniest thing for me now, after checking out the duo of Bigelow (hot) and Ryzik (also hot) in the pic above, is the inscrutable expression on the face of the guy seated to their right.

So “the usual Peggy Siegal invited elites” were there…but no dweebs, right?
And how did YOU get in, man of the people and elitist hater?

Oh look, Outdoor Clothing likes this blog very much. Anthony, that guy on the right must be an elite person, I figure. And is also probably thinking, “how do I get out of this chicken shit outfit?”
Finding it odd/funny that this site is so about how hot or not women are, no matter who the woman is. Wouldn’t it be funny if every time there was a picture of a guy the same round robin dialogue continued? Of course, it would never, but it’s funny. I guess you can take the guy out of the reptilian brain but you can never take the reptilian brain out of the guy.

I suspect the thinking is the chances of its winning are more helpful to sales now. If it wins, future printings can note that on the cover. If not, the book enjoyed the heightened interest that is only available now, and these sales prior to the awards are lagniappe. If they waited to publish after the awards and then it didn’t win, sales would likely diminish across the board.
Also, sometimes the writer wants it out early so voters can see how big a role he played in the director”s vision.

Debate for the Day: Has Bigelow’s 50s-hotness affected the 50-something male critics’ view of The Hurt Locker? Have they been charmed by this sophisticated, elegant older woman at roundtables/junkets, etc. and given the film a boost because of it?

Also, what Barry Egan said.
I wonder if you’ve noticed that James Wolcott just took note of your anti-Sirk ravings…being careful to neither name you or link to you. Good for him.
Also, it occured to me, as much as you disdain the opinions of the “film dweebs,” how often to we/they make a habit of pissing in your goddamn pool? Has anyone, for instance, pointed out that a favorite film of yours boasts a screenplay that’s middlebrow vanilla glop, a leading lady with all the sex appeal of lukewarm lumpy oatmeal, and direction that’s not merely anonymous, but blandly anonymous, and then titled that post “Respectful ‘Education’ Takedown?” No.
Seriously man. Tell Kathryn Bigelow what you think of Sirk. Have some balls.

Wells to Kenny: I confess that I rail against the dweebs from time to time because I deeply resent their cultishness and snobbishness, but — this is the real honest deal — particularly because I felt very intimidated by the upper-crust elite-critic crowd (Sarris, Richard Roud, Tom Allen at the Voice, Kael, Jacobson, Hoberman) when I first began trying my hand at the NY movie journalism game in the late ’70s. I wanted so much to be worthy of their respect and approval, and I wasn’t. Not in the late Jimmy Carter era. I only began to find my footing in the early Reagan years, and it was damn difficult getting there.
The feelings of unworthiness and borderline cluelessness on my part during the early struggle days were agonizing. I hadn’t gone to film or journalism school. I was flying by the seat of my pants and making it up as I went along with ony my life-long love of movies to feed the fire. The collapsings and sufferings I endured as I tried to bang out decent-sounding reviews on my IBM typewriter in my Bank Street apartment while hyperventilating about how I might pay my $325 monthly rent were just awful. In frustration I once smashed a jar of peant butter against the wall in my kitchen and cut my palm open, which damaged some nerve endings. Youth is wasted on the young.
It was a dark and scary time in some respects, and now that I suffer a bit less and have a handle on what I’m doing it feels right — symmetrical — to give some of that stuff I was feeling and…I don’t know, flip it around and send it back to the 21st Century dweebs. A nonsensical reaction, of course. I probably vent this feeling too much. It was just me after all, and not them — my feelings of insufficiency, my lack of schooling, my low self-esteem, etc.
On the other hand the dweebs are what they are — they define themselves quite aptly without any help from me. I am all the same very glad for any fervor about film-related topic showing up on HE, or at least being out there to be batted around and teed-off on.

The dweebs have really done themselves proud with their hilarious response to Wells’ Sirk post. The comments at Glenn’s blog are great. All sorts of insults being thrown around at the anti-Sirk crowd too, like “morons,” “knuckle-draggers” and “mouth-breathers”. Not really helping their case if they’re trying not to be seen as elitists.
There’s also a dude who thinks that I’m one of Wells’s pseudonyms – they are so blinkered by their love of Sirk that they can’t fathom that more than one person might not enjoy his work, so they speculate that Wells has registered a second account so he can back up his own posts with another opinion. It’s comedy stuff.

No, Eloi, the point is that they don’t really give a shit how you see them. And that people who play the “elitist” card are in Sarah Palin’s authoritarian anti-intellectual camp despite whatever their putative politics are.
I see that now Wells is trying to substitute a pity party for actual argument. Talk about your comedy stuff.

Glenn: I just find it massively hilarious how outraged the reaction has been to someone saying they don’t like a particular director. It’s amazing really. And what’s more, nobody seems willing to entertain Wells’ opinion as a valid one; rather they’re all saying, “He’s wrong, he knows nothing about cinema, he’s a popcorn muncher, HE is full of morons.”
It’s pure comedy when you look at it from an outsider’s point of view. People demanding to know my real name and where I was educated. You couldn’t make it up!

When I was a kid, I used to get upset when people liked a movie or band that I didn’t, and didn’t like the movies and bands I loved.
Then I grew the fuck up.

Let me walk you through this slowly, Eloi.
You say you find it “massively hilarious how outraged the reaction has been to someone saying they don’t like a particular director.” And yet, if you look at, say Lipranzer’s comments on both Wells’ original thread and the one at my blog, nobody’s tearing him a new one because he’s saying he doesn’t like Sirk. Wells didn’t say he didn’t like Sirk; he basically said Sirk was a fraud and that the “dweebs” who made Sirk’s reputation were playing a con game. And he was seconded by virtual jeers of “sucks,” “fags,” “shit,” etcetera. If you don’t see how that’ slightly different than communicating a “valid” opinion, well, there’s nothing I can do for you.
I suppose I should commend wells for being honest enough to admit that his instincts to “push back” against film snobs and dweebs ultimately stems from his feelings of being rejected by them at an early stage of his career. This doesn’t go terribly far in intellectually legitimizing his initial argument, which remains weak and is now revealed as even more obviously spite-motivated.

Glenn: In that case I would just say that Wells’ blog is not for the faint of the heart, if that level of discourse is considered offensive or too aggressive. I stand by my statement that it was a robust and impassioned debate, but if that thread is considered “virtual jeers” then God help you on the rest of the internet. I personally thought that was a great thread with a great debate about movies.
I’d far rather have the provocative and engaging debates of Wells’ blog than a site with no detractors, where everyone agrees with what the author writes and spends 30+ posts saying so.

Actually, the “faint of heart” aren’t those who are annoyed by childish jeers; they’re those who rely on said jeers to bolster an argument (or camouflage the lack thereof). Anyone serious about film criticism is not going to have much respect for people who deride Sirk-lovers (or anyone else) as “fags” etc. If you want to have an intellectual debate in the big leagues you go more for substance than for flash. LexG’s rants against the manliness of certain filmgoers are mildly amusing, for instance, but they’re worthless to anyone who’s actually trying to advance an understanding/appreciation of cinema.
As for “the rest of the internet” — yes, discourse on the Web is often at the level of pond scum. What’s your point?

“the can send out stickers for the cover – like when a novel gets picked for Oprah’s book club”
Oh, sure, they can send out a round of sticker that most stores won’t bother to put on it, but it seems unlikely that they will. (And there’s certainly an argument that they shouldn’t bother — anybody who cares what won those awards enough to be influenced to make a purchase would already know.)
“If they waited to publish after the awards and then it didn’t win, sales would likely diminish across the board.”
Well, that’s kind of my point — for a movie many people are alleging to be the favorite in the Best Picture race, this seems like a timid move, tapping in on the publicity that exists during the race rather than the publicity of winning.
“Also, sometimes the writer wants it out early so voters can see how big a role he played in the director”s vision.”
That’s certainly fair — I think they should send actual scripts out to voters, but I suppose it’s hard enough to get them to watch the videos.

Lazurus, I’m not sure if you’ll read this response since this thread is dead, but yes, absolutely, it was just a typo. I can think we can all agree that things such as being crass, cynical, sarcastic or even resorting to cheap insults like STFU have never been a part of the HE discourse. I believe that we are a better community because of it.
