Before he became a successful director, a friend asked the late Hal Ashby for a secret tip about how to get an actress to emotionally deliver in a restrained but full-on way. Ashby said, “Tell her to do a scene with every last thing she’s got — scream, cry, pound the floor, no holds barred, pull out the stops. And when she’s done doing that, say to her “okay, now do it again only this time give me nothing. Shut yourself down and be a zombie.” And the residue of the wild take will still be there, and the zombie take will be just right.”

Bud Cort’s birthday today, somehow I doubt Ashby did this with Bud’s co-star Ruth Gordon.
Reminds me that for all their many flaws, I’d still like to own SECOND HAND HEARTS and 8 MILLION WAYS TO DIE on DVD. The former I could see popping up on Warner Archive. I still can’t figure out who owns the latter, though. Who’s handling all the old Mark Damon PSO titles? I know some wound up with Icon and they were picked up by Blue Underground for DVD, but I would think that if WAYS were in that package, we’d have it by now.
I could’ve sworn that there had been an announcement at some point about an ’8 Million Ways to Die’ DVD that would be restored to some extent, but now I can’t find any evidence of that.
ASHBY POWER. LAST DETAIL = eternal masterpiece. Speaking of Ashby and great actors: What ever became of the black guy from that? Great performance, holding his own opposite Jack and Randy Quaid in two of their very best performances. Everyone loves Being There, Harold and Maude, Bound for Glory, Shampoo… but LAST DETAIL is beyond excellent, and if you haven’t seen it, TRUST ME, you need to rectify that STAT.
Also LOVE EIGHT MILLION WAYS TO DIE, but pretty sure I’ve sung its praises ten million times here. Need to Netflix LOOKIN’ TO GET OUT, being a big BURT YOUNG CONNOISSEUR.

That tip is great. When you will think about what is written above you have to realize that to be a great director you have to be a psychologist a little bit as well as to be a little genius with a lot of luck. Really, now I bow before the profession of director.
