The thing that seems to slip through the cracks of this whole ugly mss is that when they were floating possible popes, it was ALREADY KNOWN that this guy had covered up for child molesting priests. This is not new at all. So, that it all comes to a head now, years after he’s been selected, seems late to the party.
Don’t misunderstand me. This whole thing sickens me and I think all of these people should be charged and tried for their crimes and those who covered it up should also be behind bars.
There should be zero tolerance for those who do this type of atrocity against humanity.
European mobs being what they are, there’s something delicious about how now that that blood is in the water they beginning to rise up. Not back when there was more than ample evidence coming out of America and any intelligent person could surmise that if it’s that widespread here then it probably is pretty widespread there.
Wonder how long it will take them (if ever) to finally realize that priests have been sexually abusing others and themselves from the moment it was decided they couldn’t have sex. A human being’s primary motivation after eating is fucking. That simple. It’s your purpose for drawing air and if you deny it accepted outlets, it will find unacceptable ones.
The sweet irony here is that the cardinals elected Joe Ratzinger to be a retro pope and put some breaks on John Paul’s modernizing. If this thing keeps snowballing, it’s going to not only take down their dear old Benedict, but a lot of the hierarchy as well.
It’s probably only a matter of time before tales of equally hideous abuse are unearthed about nuns.
So I guess Maher temporarily takes Hitchens off his shitlist when he needs some sharp, intelligently delivered religion-bashin’. I see how that works. (“Stick to the topic, Chris!”)

I don’t know for a fact that Hitchens is the third-most frequent guest on Maher’s show, but I do know that he IS a frequent guest, and has been as long as I’ve been watching it. So this “shitlist” of Maher’s that he’s supposedly been on, is either fairly old or never existed. Usually he’s on the panel, though, not the featured interview.
And here’s the other thing, Crabs. They happened to be good friends and Hitchens has told stories about their many wild nights getting hammered together.
Hitchens in his Bush years was such a tool, but this Pope is definitely a certifiable bastard. JPII needs a lot of the blame, he was cultivating the shit out of this guy. I watched Maher back in the ABC days, when it was actually a fairly balanced group of talkers snarking on the ridiculousness of Washington. (back when Arianna Huffington found it more professionally expedient to be a conservative)
It was a good show then.
Now it’s just a big, liberal vanity project for Maher. People say liberals aren’t treated nicely by Bill O’Reilly, but at least Bill doesn’t rip the person in front of a stacked guest deck and a studio packed with sycophant agreers clapping like seals at his every word.
I wouldn’t dig that framework if the person running it spoke my jive, much less one who doesn’t.
And really, don’t you think he’s becoming sort of ridiculous? It seems half of what he says these days is more or less said to invoke a “can you believe what Bill Maher is saying?!” reaction than actual thought.
Finally, I love me Hitchens. It’s just funny how he’s confounded people by not going down a straight line. i.e., conservatives like him ’till he starts in against religion, liberals like him ’till he tears into, well, where do I start.
