I watched it on demand a couple of months ago and it haunts me every day to know that Michael Ruppert’s prognostications will probably come true. It’s simple logic -the population exploded with the discovery of petroleum as the primary source of not only energy but a key component in everything we use from tires to toothbrushes. When we exhaust it the population will have to decline accordingly. Watch it and you cannot ignore the undeniable truth…our time is running out.
Great flick. I highly recommend reading the book as well.
i too watched it via on demand and was blown away by this guy and his thoughts on where we’re at as a society and where we’re headed.
Many thanks to Jeff on promoting this last fall. I have digested the movie, book (an even more somber read) and I check the Wilderness site daily. I even have the poison ivy to show for the building of my garden in the backyard. Couple Ruppert with Michael Lewis and his Big Short and you can see much of this coming true. I Rather be prepare and wrong then just flat-out wrong.
Though many of his theories have become reality (which is emphasized over and over again throughout the film), many have not.
But Adam makes a good point. It’s sort of a foregone conclusion that the inhabitants of this planet are doomed.
Mother Nature is a fickle bitch. And she is not to be trifled with.
And just like many other pat civilizations have been wiped out by famine, floods, etc and so on, ours is no different. Well, actually, it’s probably worse.
We simply do not have the resources to sustain life at the rate things are going. Overpopulation is huge issue. Water and food shortages are commonplace in most of the world. And their are simply too many people on this planet…and the numbers are growing at an alarming rate.
I really got into the movie, but truth be told, only at arm’s length. There’s something about the doomsdays theories that never quite wash with me. You can dress them up with numbers and facts and logic, but the future is just never that predictable. Don’t get me wrong, I completely buy what Ruppert is selling, but there’s something about the story taken as a whole – and something that even he seems to concede – that this may only be part of the story.
I guess my point is, life finds a way, and each generation is smarter and more humane than the last, so to start screaming we’re all going to be fucked usually comes from someone who will feel that way to some degree, no matter what.
Human organisms have become a disease to this planet. And what’ does nature do when the scales are so tipped? She eradicates the cause of the problem.
The only solution is rid nature of the human virus–which is US.

People need to stop procreating. Maybe not in a global pandemic, Children of Men sort of way, but seriously, people need to stop making babies.
Unfortunately, that will never happen.
The number of children per family is in direct correlation to the level of education of those who chose to bring more children into this world. And their are a whole lot of uneducated, stupid folks in this country and elsewhere.
Oh, and the other direct correlation between number of children per family is what? RELIGION. Evangelical Christians are taught to spread their seed and make as many Christian warriors as they can conceive.
Yet another reason why I believe in selective eugenics.
If you need a license to operate a motor vehicle, then why don’t you need one to make babies?
The Chinese system works. Pay citizens to NOT have more than one child.
And Collapse is one of the best documentaries of the decade. But I think documentary is too general of a word in this case. Perhaps it should be referred to as the best horror film.

Yeah I don’t think that statement holds water. Watch the news lately?
I really do believe that each generation is smarter and more humane than the past. Present times always seem like the most desperate, but compare the progress in the 1900s to the 1800s, and work your way backwards. We’re still evolving as a species, but I think you’d be hard-pressed to say that we reached the apex of humanity. And the Tea Baggers? Really, they’re just a sideshow of ignorance when before they were the majority, and that only further proves the point.
Depends on how you define “our” civilization. If it is the entire current global community, then of course “we” are doomed. The cosmic cruel joke of the last couple of decades of humanitarian aid to places on the brink of mass starvation is that we simply raised the eventual death toll. Barring mass sterilization, we are just one global warming induced world wide drought from the tipping point.
But as far as “our” being the US, well, there’s a lot of extenuating circumstances that work in our favor starting with our huge surplus of exported food. Plus, every civilization that has failed before had a very concentrated hierarchy. The short history of the US shows that very few our “titans” last more than a few generations. Those who grow complacent in a capitalistic system are quickly left behind. Ask Xerox.
Mat, I think there are marginal advances in some areas, but taking the long view if every generation were really smarter and more humane – at least to a degree that would make a difference – we as a species would have more things figured out and be living in a much more co-operative way than we do. We have the resources to end world poverty, and we’ve totally failed to end it. That’s just one example. And financial crisis repeat themselves, so while there are some advances – like a black president – I see us running in place at best.
I loved this chilling, very frank film. Oddly, every friend I exposed to it didn’t like it at all. I attribute this to the film’s unflinching and uncompromising position… People prefer placation, I suppose.

Yes, I have. And I can’t think of any protests anywhere in the world that it’s less humane than.
That’s probably a bit too extreme, Gordo, but my point was that they aren’t humane.
