Ebert’s arguments are pretty flawed in that article. I’m not a huge fan of 3D, but this part:
“Recall the greatest moviegoing experiences of your lifetime. Did they “need” 3-D? A great film completely engages our imaginations. What would Fargo gain in 3-D? Precious? Casablanca?”
… just seems a bit Luddite. You could have argued the same thing when they brought in colour. “Did Casablanca need colour?”
And the whole, “I CANNOT IMAGINE A SERIOUS DRAMA, SUCH AS UP IN THE AIR OR THE HURT LOCKER, IN 3-D. Neither can directors,” says more about him than it does about filmmakers. I’m sure plenty of young filmmakers will grow up using 3D and make some very good films indeed. Just because he hasn’t seen any yet doesn’t mean it’s completely useless.
Again, I don’t really care about 3D and I can’t say it adds anything, but his line of argument seems pretty weak. “It’s not the way I’m used to,” essentially.
Hell no, most good movies do not even need color, let alone 3D. But let’s say for the argument that there are two general categories of film: One is about ideas and a good story and the other is about sensation. The latter category will naturally do better with 3D, not to mention buzzers under your seat and smell-o-vision. This is what all you snot-nosed children want. But ideas and story are more interesting when you grow up. And get the hell off my lawn!
I am going to watch this using the shitty CARDBOARD 3D GLASSES that came in my My Bloody Valentine DVD.
Also: What sort of emotional distress do we think DZ goes through on a night like this, where, despite Jeff doing a yeoman’s job of providing interesting, riffable threads, nothing’s really catching fire and taking off?

Everyone’s confusion on watching this properly is pretty baffling considering the “red/blue” glasses required for viewing are shown to you 8 seconds into the video.
Red/Blue anaglyphs are the simplest 3D images to create and pretty much all you can share over a computer with a myriad of users on various platforms.
