If someone is in a position to forward relatively recent drafts of the first episodes of Tilda, the HBO series that will star Diane Keaton as a Hollywood blogger somewhat like Nikki Finke, please do so. Bill Condon and Cynthia Mort are in creative control.
Let the casting suggestions begin for the Jeffrey Wells equivalent character that is bound to pop up at some point if this show is worth a damn.
Al Pacino has been working with HBO a lot recently.
I’m not that sure what her character will be like, but I’m pretty sure that she’ll be wearing little, metal-framed eyeglasses, a high-necked, long-sleeved blouse and white gloves.
Philip Seymour Hoffman in a bathing suit as JW
How much creative control will Condon have if he’s doing the next Twilight movie? (And how’s that for a sentence I never thought I’d write, let alone ponder?)
Is it called TILDA because TOLDJA is a registered trademark?
Forget this noise. You watching TREME, Wells? Best new show of the year.

My bad, missed the other thread.
Definitely Robert Redford as Jeff. Cate Blanchett as Nikki.
(This is the glammed-up Hollywood casting, of course.)
“Definitely Robert Redford as Jeff. Cate Blanchett as Nikki.

Yeah, but I think they should let Wells do a cameo ala Pee Wee Herman as the desk clerk in the “Cowboy Hat/Bed and Breakfast” sequence…
“Paging Mr. Wells…”
Very curious as to the angle here; I’m assuming that most people who cast Diane Keaton are looking for a sympathetic character in their project.
Of course, golden long-past-days aside, I find Keaton to currently be a registerable trademark of brightly-lit mediocrity; I can barely stomach it when she has a film on the release slate because I inevitably have to endure the trailers a half-dozen times.
I hope they’re going for a LarryDavidian sort of take- sort of can’t help but enjoy watching someone you should otherwise hate.
CASTING WELLS? Oh my. Genius opportunity.
Pulling from the HBO stable… I’d love to see Ian McShane, if they focus on Wells’ ferocious rhetoric and passion… or, if they go for the oldster who’s still hip and a wise surveyor of the filmworld with a near-flawless bullshit detector when it comes to the medium itself (if perhaps not the drama surrounding the industry), then go with Robert Greenwood.
But they’d probably go with their 2nd tier actors for a Wells character (which would be a mistake) but… pulling from their minor-league talent… hmmm…. I’d love to see something crazy like Luis Guzman – doesn’t fit visually or verbally, but it’d capture Wells as intense and full of flair.
But better than pulling from their original programming roster, the best choice of all could probably be someone from their standup special circuit – none other than Lewis Black himself (taken right from one of the promotional quotes on the HE site too!).
Andy Dick must be tapped to play the commenter with the highest # of comments on the Nikke Finke blog.
This idea has potential. HBO rarely fails – have loved most of their original programs.
(btw, obviously, above I meant BRUCE Greenwood from JFC…)
I like how, when HBO has a David Simon show on, they don’t even need to pretend their other shows will appeal to minorities. Even the one about “How To Make It In America” is about white hipsters in Brooklyn.
Drake Hogestyn (aka John Black of Days of Our Lives) IS Jeff Wells.
Lex! you are dangerous, English. I’m going to step back from the perfection of that suggestion in terror.
Jon Voight should play Wells. and Joseph R. Gannascoli (Vito on Sopranos) should play Poland.
Jeff watch TREME? Didn’t he decide not to watch THE WIRE?
Well, to be fair, Wells did say he tried to watch a 3rd season ep of THE WIRE. Of course, with any good show, you have to start t the beginning, but Wells is too busy for that noise. I was just thinking he might get in on this (so far) stellar first season.
wasn’t it one of the last episodes of the 5th season?
In Finke-related news, apparently her website attracts the same lunatics as Big Hollywood: http://www.deadline.com/2010/04/so-who%E2%80%99s-going-to-play-obama/#more-36527
Tyler Perry’s Obama!
I would really love to see that happen. Make it so, Oprah!
Sorry, but so far Treme is a huge bore. Riding the coattails of The Wire, that’s all I can say at the moment. And don;t get me started on The Pacific. No extra $ for Deadwood Seaon 4, but $200 million for Hanks and Speilberg’s sandbox.
I was so excited about Treme … they need to fix it ASAP. The fact that HBO renewed it after one mediocre episode is baffling, as are the 100 scores on Metacritic.
raygo: Haven’t seen Treme yet so can’t comment on that, but I assume the $200m for The Pacific is due to its wide international appeal and stellar DVD sales. I’m sure it’s a huge revenue source for HBO or they’d not have made the giant initial investment. Deadwood, while one of the greatest TV shows of all time, sadly didn’t catch on with a wider audience.
Deadwood seasons 1-3 are $19.99 on iTunes now, vs. $35-70 for DVDs.
The Pacific is by-the-numbers, nothing very compelling. Who’s shelling out the big bucks for these DVDs? I suppose people may think they’re getting Ken Burns-like history, but they’re not.
Treme disappoints like John from Cincinatti did.
In for a dime, in for ten episodes…but THE PACIFIC is pretty plodding TV, not as compelling as BAND OF BROTHERS. Only occasionally does something really stick.
Um, raygo, are you sure you are watching the same show?
First thing, I will go on record saying that the TREME pilot was probably a bit long in the tooth at almost 90 minutes, but still full of good stuff. For me, it’s the 2nd ep where things took off. One thing it has going for it is Clarke Peters, known for playing Lester Freamon on THE WIRE. As hard as it is to say, from second one he appeared in TREME (thoughts of Lester left my head. It was magical. I haven’t thought of Lester at all while watching him. HIs soulful (and vengeful) Chief is an incredible piece of acting that is to be relished. All you have ot do is look into those sad eyes as he looks at the damaged home to see the hurt. In the second and third eps, w see a man proud of his tradition and heritage ad willing to go to extremes to protect everything he holds dear. it’s pretty compelling stuff.
As for that other larger than like actor from THE WIRE, Wendell Pierce, he is also fun to watch (as he has been in every thing he has ever done). Like THE WIRE’s Bunk, he’s a smooth cat with a voice like jazz itself. Here, playing an always broke ‘bone playe with too many women and too many kids, always scrambling for cab fare and work, he is also holding on to his way of life, the live music just getting up and going again.
I’m addressing the two most obvious casting choices because, so far, I am impressed at how different TREME is from THE WIRE. yes, they both deal in largely black casts and are both large ensemble pieces that deal with damaged cities, but there’s a real currency of something that runs through TREME that THE WIRE didn’t need. Music. Music seeps into everything about this show.
If you hate jazz, that’s your sorry world, cause it ain’t mie. Jazz is so prevalent that it gives the show a very Altmanesque vibe that has really grown on me, especially in the later two eps that have aired. i think that it might be the mot vital thing. It’s a currency that so many of the characters understand and live and speak in. Even those who seem like outsiders looking in (looking at you Davis, played by the, at time grating, but mostly hilarious Steve Zahn), the music is essetntial to viewing the community as a whole.
Go ahead, go watch something else. David Simon fans are used to it. HBO probably renewed TREME for two big reasons: 1) it’s the only truly great reviewed show they’ve put on the air since THE WIRE ended and 2) Everything else they do is played out (ENTOURAGE, CYE-which should’ve ended after last season but got renewed AGAIN, and TRUE BLOOD (schlock at its best))
I look forward to enjoying this nuanced, imaginative and breathtaking show for years to come. Hopefully.
Hip Hop … I haven’t written it off. At some point, I plan an On-Demand marathon to give it another chance. I appreciate your passion. As a fan of Deadwood and The Wire, I was excited to see this project come together, including some great actors like Melissa Leo and John Goodman. Something’s not coming togther for me on this one.
Jazz sucks.
No prejudice against colored Transformers, s’il vous plait.
