The Special Relationship…ah, yes. An “entertaining period piece” and a pleasurable trio of performances, it is widely agreed, from Dennis Quaid (Bill Clinton), Michael Sheen (Tony Blair) and Hope Davis (Hillary Clinton). I won’t be seeing it until tomorrow night, when I arrive back home, so if anyone’s had the pleasure, please share.
i found it thoroughly entertaining… quaid is the best he’s been in a while and davis should become the go to person for projects featuring hillary (as sheen is for blair)…. not great and probably couldn’t have made it as a theatrical release but will still get attention come emmy time….
btw — on tues hbo is airing ‘i knew it was you: rediscovering john cazale’…. a terrific doc (and i think the first time meryl streep has talked about him on camera…but not sure about that)…..

The (Toronto-based) Globe and Mail’s Andrew Ryan says the one to watch is veteran character actress Hope Davis. as Hillary Clinton. She plays Hillary as steely and smart, and according to this account, the real brains of the Clinton administration. The Toronto Star’s Rob Salem says Dennis Quiad “nails Clinton.”

Having just seen it, I still think John Travolta’s is the best performance as Clinton. Quaid doesn’t quite convey his humorous side. But Hope Davis as Hillary, she’s one of the best fits since Dylan Baker as Robert McNamara in Thirteen Days. She almost makes me wish Hillary had become President, so she could’ve starred in a full bio-pic, but absent that climatic ending, it’s unlikely one will be made.
I have to say I’d be more interested in a Reagan/Thatcher flick.
Maybe HBO will make a Democratic ’08 Primary movie and Hope Davis could reprise the character. Cast Harry Lennix as Obama. I’d watch it. Hell I could see Quaid playing a really good McCain.
I watched the replay of The Special Relationship, and it is good in the way that the best HBO original movies tend to be, which is to say quietly very good but not a knockout. Quaid is maybe a lesser Clinton than Travolta but very good nonetheless.
I agree, Quaid didn’t quite match Travolta’s performance in “Primary Colors”, but Hope Davis as Hillary did steal the show.
I’d love to see Peter Morgan tackle a Hillary movie with Davis in the lead, but like you said.. it might be anti-climatic with her loss.
Quaid was awesome as Clinton. The real Clinton isn’t all smiles like Travolta’s in Primary Colors. Quaid gave us a pragmatic, smart politician, who fucked up big time by not giving Gore an easy victory.
I’d love to see everyone involved in this production do a huge 2008 HBO election saga.
