With 3D Blurays sure to catch on eventually, I’m guessing that sooner or later the first wave of Hollywood’s 3D movies (released between ’53 and ’55) will eventually hit the home market. The 3D version of Alfred Hitchcock‘s Dial M or Murder (which I’ve seen once in a theatre) would be well worth the price. Ditto the 3-D black-and-white version of The Creature From The Black Lagoon. As well as Hondo, Miss Sadie Thompson and Money From Home, the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis comedy.
But I’d especially love to see a 3D version of Gorilla At Large (1954), a hokey thriller about an actor in a gorilla suit (his name was George Barrows) terrorizing Anne Bancroft under a circus tent. Cameron Mitchell, Raymond Burr, Lee J. Cobb and Lee Marvin costarred. It’s one of those so-shamelessly-cheeseball-it’s-mildly-hilarious B flicks. Everyone knows the drill on these.
The question is whether or not distributors decide that transferring half-century-old 3D films, which used a fairly primitive technology that may not be easily transferrable to digital, is achievable without costing an arm and a leg, and whether projected revenues from the home-3D market are deemed sufficient from a business perspective.
The GAL trailer’s golden moment is a line spoken by Cobb: “All I know is there’s a couple of gorillas around here, and one of them’s a killer.”
Bancroft was still paying her dues and Raymond Burr had recently rubbed fur with another simian in Bride of the Gorilla… but the real head-scratcher here is Lee J. Cobb… this is the same year as On The Waterfront.
I don’t think there was ever a color version of CREATURE. MISS SADIE THOMPSON is part of a Rita Hayworth box set due this year, but it’s a bore in any dimension and not worth the effort to showcase in 3D.
KISS ME, KATE is amusing in 3D. Much more fun, 3D-wise, are a bunch of Columbia movies that Film Forum showed in 3D a few years ago, like MAN IN THE DARK (Edmond O’Brien, with a rollercoaster climax) and THE STRANGER WORE A GUN (Randolph Scott).
HOUSE OF WAX of course. And FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN, too, with its startling effects–3D Criterion Blu-ray, anyone? (They have the flat version.)
If memory is correct, George Barrows played the title character in ROBOT MONSTER–gorilla wearing diving helmet.
I’ll never forget watching a 3-D double bill of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE at a local theater as a kid…it was my first time seeing 3-D movies, and I remember being blown away, even though they were in B&W….
Somehow, those films hold much fonder memories for me than the ones I saw during the short lived 80′s 3-D surge…maybe the fact that they were ‘Monster Movies’ made them more memorable for me, but more likely it’s because they were simply BETTER movies.
Because really, even in full color, JAWS 3-D doesn’t hold a candle to the CREATURE…
3D is a fad and will be completely out of theaters in 5 years or less. People are already sick of it and sick of paying extra for it. I’m in thte middle of the country and I can tell you this is the truth.
Also, anyone that is buying a 3D HDTV or 3D BD player is REALLY going to be mad in a few years when it’s all over.
I’m just curious… and not enough of a technophile to know… but since the ’50s 3D movies were shot and projected in a completely different process than anything being used in modern cinema, wouldn’t it require as difficult a process to render them in the 3D being used for these new sets as would be required to “multidimensionalize” any standard 2D movie? Anybody know? I doubt the new 3D BluRay players will be coming with red-and-blue glasses as well as the clear ones, so I wonder if that bodes well for “House of Wax,” et al.

3D memories of the 1980′s…
“House of Wax”… I remember the scene where Charles Bronson walks in front of the screen to sneak up on the hero, and for a second, I thought, “Stupid idiot blocking my view of the screen”…
…and “Friday the 13th III” when Jason squeezes somebody’s head and their eye pops out of their skull…
TCM showed Gorilla at Large a couple months ago. Not a good film, to be sure, but it does hit the sweet spot if you’re in the right mood.
As to the various 3D processes, they all work on the same principle. Two separate images are shot, one for the left eye and one for the right, and then the images are combined, either through red/cyan or polarized glasses. If I recall, most of the 50s 3D films actually did use the polarized process, but since this couldn’t translate to TV, they’ve only been seen in the red/cyan process since the 50s.
In any event, as long as the two separate negatives continue to exist, it should be possible to “modernize” any film shot in the 3D process, regardless of what viewing process was used.
Have to echo derekmonster in the love for “Creature from the Black Lagoon” and “It Came from Outer Space”, both directed by Jack Arnold (the best director of “Gilligan’s Island” and “Brady Bunch” episodes in film history.)
