Godfather Town

As we began our Sicilian journey it seemed important to visit Forza d’Argo, a small, centuries-old village near Taormina that Francis Coppola used for scenes in The Godfather, Part II. It’s the village that young Vito escapes from while local mafioso are seeking him out. The film conceals the fact that it overlooks the Ionian sea — quite an eyeful.

  2. Something that’s weird is when a traveler (like Jeff here) visits a spot from an iconic movie that’s just old enough that it seems insane that the locales still exist.

    Never mind that, yes, this place been around for decades, centuries. In my small mind, it’s like “How can a spot from 1974 still be around????” Like if Jeff posted pics of the mountains from THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, I’d be like, WHOA, that stuff’s still around from forty years ago?

    I moved to LA in the mid 90s and to this day I still can’t believe when I see some famous spot from a ’70s movie– Like you go around this exhaust-fume-scorched 2010 hostile gangland of a city, then out of nowhere you realize, “Holy shit, that street corner was in Robert Aldrich’s HUSTLE 35 years ago!”

    In much the same way, when I watch FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, I marvel that I’m looking at THE VALLEY and a lot of familiar streets, yet they have all these white people in the movie. Total disconnect. We all know there aren’t two dozen Caucasians of any age in all of Los Angeles, anywhere.

  3. jeez Lex. The 70′s aren’t ancient times. I know of a group – of course I do – who just returned from the Tatooine of Star Wars. British dude is making his final trip to Tunisia and signed up 14 people who also wanted to be there.

    The dangerous road trip Grace Kelly took from Nice to Monaco in To Catch a Thief and also the site of her death decades later – That was a must-see for me.The non-American locales tend to stay around and live.

  4. Lex, you really want to be stunned, take a tour of the Paramount studios down on Melrose some time. A lot of films and TV shows used little locations in and around the studio itself for exteriors. The front of the old Desilu offices doubled as the high school in Happy Days (and, I think, the Brady Bunch). Some of the old writers offices are still easily recognizable from Sunset Boulevard. And the lobby of the Paramount theater doubled as a Colombian hotel lobby in Clear and Present Danger.
