Good One

“The ugly smell of unexamined privilege hangs over this film like the smoke from cheap incense.” — from A.O. Scott‘s 5.27 review of Sex and the City 2.

Sex and the City 2 has drawn 14% and 33% positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, respectively. Who, then, has given it a pass? The Philadelpha Inquirer‘s Carrie Rickey, Boston Pheonix‘s Jeffrey Gantz, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch‘s Gail Pennington, the Hollywood Reporter‘s Stephen Farber, NPR’s Mia Mask, etc.

  1. In other words re: Jeffrey Gantz and Stephen Farber- “Yes I’m gay and I don’t care who knows it!”

  2. I’m sure one of the many gay commenters can explain it better than Wikipedia’s “camp” entry, but…

WHY exactly do gay dudes wanna sit around watching bitchy, shrewish, put-on, diva-ish, unconventional-looking women get in catfights and exchange tart-tongued barbs? Like, what is the actual, serious reason that is appealing to a guy dude? It’d be like a straight guy wanting to watch old queens play poker or something… It doesn’t compute.

I like to think if I was a gay guy I’d just sit around watching TROY all day or something. What’s with the whole Golden Girls/Glee/Housewives/catty high school satire thing where gay dudes watch that shit and tisk and hiss and twirl their nonexistent stache over all the vamping? Shouldn’t they just wanna watch dudes all the time, not fantasize themselves as Bea Arthur?

  3. Gail Pennington is the St. Louis Post Dispatch’s TV critic, and she reviews movies only once in a blue moon. I’m guessing that either she begged to do this one or Joe Williams and Calvin Wilson could smell the stink from a mile away and handed it off.

  4. “The ugly smell of unexamined privilege hangs over this film like the smoke from cheap incense.”

Does Scott not live and work in Manhattan where unexamined privilege is an inescapable way of life? It seems a tad peevish to criticize the Bradshaw Bunch for something that surrounds those of us who live or work in the city or the snooty suburbs. Just because Manhattan, sorry Lex, is the center of the universe doesn’t mean everyone here with a little dough is at the center of the center.

Out of connubial obligation, I watch Selling New York on the Home and Garden channel. If you want to witness behavior that makes Carrie look like Mother Theresa, just tune in tonight.

As my dear friend Lightnin’ Hopkins is always saying, “It’s a sin to be rich.”

  5. Lex, I’m gay and I *COMPLETELY* agree with you. I’ve never understood that stuff.

I enjoyed SATC (the show) when it was at its peak; it was funny, clever, well-put-together. But the whole “these characters are really 4 gay men in drag” thing became tiresome. I don’t know straight women who behave that way, but I know far too many gay men who do. And the first movie was 2-1/2 hours of whiny, obscenely rich princesses whining about how tough it is to be an obscenely rich princess. Carrie’s married to a gazillionaire, she has a closet the size of a small studio just for her f—-g *SHOES*… and she’s still unhappy? I mean, jeezus.

  6. “I like to think if I was a gay guy I’d just sit around watching TROY all day or something.”

    Or Top Gun.

  7. So why do straight guys like TOP GUN? Because of the beach volleyball scene? Rick Rossovich’s pecs?

  8. And why would Cynthia Nixon become a lesbian so she could marry someone who looks just like the guy who just won American Idol?

  9. Ah, but the tomatometer’s gender bias creeps into this one, big time. Is it worse, by large measure, than Prince of Persia? Not by a whole lot. Is it worse than the latest zombie-movie-to-make-my-house-note by George A. Romero? Give me a break.

  10. There must be something intriguing beneath the surface of SACT2. You cannot whip out a line like Scott’s, without stimulating something in the brain. Wild Hogs, e.g., could not engender such a perfectly phrased blurb.

  11. Otown: I don’t know if it’s “worse” than Prince of Persia, but it’s certainly a lot more shrill and grating. Early reviews of PoP just describe it as dull, whereas SATC is actively hateful. I don’t think it’s down to gender bias there at all.

  12. “Ah, but the tomatometer’s gender bias creeps into this one, big time. Is it worse, by large measure, than Prince of Persia?”

Probably, yeah. Persia is slightly above-average, though it’s no “Pirates.” And Survival of The Dead is a hoot.

There’s plenty of truth to the “bad women’s movies don’t get the pass bad men’s movies do” thing – i.e. movie guys who SHRED Nicholas Sparks adaptations but thumbs-up the “Transporter” movies as guilty-pleasures – but the SaTC franchise is in a rancid class by itself… It’s the female equivalent of “Transformers.”

  13. Survival of the Dead is crap. But it’s still light years better than Diary of the Dead.

And I’d rather watch both on a loop than have to suffer through a reel of either Sex ad the city movie.

  14. @Prager, re: Cynthia Nixon — more to the point, the first time I saw a pic of Nixon and her girlfriend, I said “why is Cynthia Nixon dating Danny Bonaduce?”

  15. I think I have a novel idea. These movies are about middle aged, heterosexual females, right? Why not hire a middle aged, heterosexual female to write the script? Hiring a gay man to write these things is like hiring a lesbian to write a horny teenage boy movie.

  16. “WHY exactly do gay dudes wanna sit around watching bitchy, shrewish, put-on, diva-ish, unconventional-looking women get in catfights and exchange tart-tongued barbs? Like, what is the actual, serious reason that is appealing to a guy dude?”

WHY don’t you answer these burning questions yourself, Mr. “All I Have Are Female Friends, Actually”…

  17. @Prager (and MikeS): To be fair, I saw a recent quote from C-Nix saying the woman she fell in love with was basically “a short man with breasts.”

Pretty funny stuff, although I have to admit I’m at least a little curious how her lover took that (“oh, so I’m a man now?”).

  18. greatscott: Although I’m sure King was the head writer on the series, all but one of the other writers were women. I’m going to guess their presence in the room probably contributed to the show’s overall good quality in comparison to the films.

  19. Interesting that on Memorial Day weekend, both of the big popcorn eloi appeal blockbuster movies have Middle East settings. Weird? Meaningless? Conspiracy?

  20. “I like to think if I was a gay guy I’d just sit around watching TROY all day or something.”

Just as all straight men don’t want to sit around and watch jailbait girls try on tiny outfits and paint each others toenails, all gay men do not want to sit around all day and watch Troy. You have proven that you are equally clueless about normal sexual desires of men of both proclivities.
