If they’d have broadcast it online, with country-specific commercials in the middle of it, people would have watched it there and they could have sold the advertising. Instead they delay its broadcast worldwide and everyone torrents it.
The problem is worldwide sales. ABC make too much money selling Lost abroad to offer it online yet. When the old broadcast model finally dies, ABC will be able to sell Lost (or whatever show they have at the time) directly to customers abroad at the time of its initial broadcast, either by paying for the show or selling region-specific commercials in the middle.
I actually prefer the live streaming sites. At least for sporting events and the like. Who wants to download an entire baseball game a few hours later when the result will likely be spoiled before you’re able to watch it in its entirety?
I also prefer to stream films as opposed to torrenting them. Just seems safer, from a legal perspective. Although it seems that — unsurprisingly — they’re having a really hard time legislating anything.
