I got into Amsterdam airport a half-hour ago and went right to my favorite spot — a cool-climate, Jetsons-designed multi-media internet lounge with great wifi and all kinds of desks and chairs and drinks at a nearby bar. It’s beautiful — nirvana for someone like myself. I’ve seen an operation like this in Zurich and maybe one or two other European cities, but I don’t know of any U.S. airport that has anything remotely like it.

BIG differences and consistently so. Very friendly people, too. My daughter was trying to connect with a Swiss exchange student before we just showed up, having missed connections previously. A passenger on a Swiss train saw our dilemma and immediately, without questions, offered his cell phone to use.

Schiphol has to be the best airport I’ve ever encountered. Modern, spacious, elegant, and everything you’d need if you ended up stranded there (unlike some others that begin with H). Very pricey, but worth it.

Sorry, are you referring to Heathrow here? I only ask because it seemed like a futuristic wonderworld paradise compared to LAX when I flew through London this Christmas. Tom Bradley International Terminal in LAX is run-down, crappy, half-constructed… the only place to even sit down near my gate was a shitty unclean restaurant serving cheap Mexican food. Then I get to Heathrow and it’s like this gigantic multi-level mall with lights everywhere, throngs of sophisticated foreigners walking to and fro, shops, pubs, restaurants, etc.
Maybe your H meant something else, but if Schiphol is that much better than Heathrow, I gotta check it out…
