If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend seeking out Welles’ extensive interview on the early 1980s BBC Arena programme – he’s in this kind of form throughout, clearly enjoying the interview and candidly discussing every aspect of his career.

I never could understand the success of Dinah Shore on television. She always seemed like such a grinning, agreeable idiot with not a lot going on upstairs. Maybe that’s all it takes.
Orson, on the other hand, had almost too much going on upstairs. Truly a cautionary tale about abusing and misusing the talent one has. It’s hard to complain about Orson’s output given The Masterpiece (CITIZEN KANE) and The Almost Masterpiece (TOUCH OF EVIL), but there is a huge void of his life spent in limbo. It’s a shame to see him bloated, drunk, and broken when so much talent was at stake.
Also – it’s fucking cool to smoke a stogie on camera. Don’t smoke, but I miss that shit.
Touch of Evil is an almost-masterpiece??? Good lord, you’re a tough critic. If anything, that’s his second masterpiece, and The Magnificient Ambersons is his near-masterpiece (although I wouldn’t even argue too strongly against that being his third, even in compromised condition).
Chimes tt Midnight is his real 2nd masterpiece. Touch of Evil has brilliance in it but overall it doesn’t touch Citizen Kane and Chimes at Midnight.
