Different Breed
There’s a clear difference between the U.S. trailer for David Michod‘s Animal Kingdom (Sony Classics, 8.13), which I saw at Sundance 2010, and what I gather is the Australian version (which I’ve posted below). I’m cool with the former, but a bigger fan of the latter.
Really looking forward to this. If it doesn’t garner any Oscar nods, I bet it will get some at the Indie Spirit Awards.

Guy Pearce = instant must watch in anything. ‘Cept for that Sandler kiddy movie, obviously.

Pearce fans should know that he’s only in this for a portion of the film. The movie’s good enough that you tend to not mind. Or, rather, it’s GREAT enough.

I love Pearce, but it does sometimes feel like he hasn’t quite lived up to his potential. He’s excellent in everything, but he lacks that defining career streak that certain other edgy actors that straddle the character actor/movie star line have. Like when Spacey had LA Confidential, The Usual Suspects, Seven and American Beauty all in close proximity. And Norton had a similar spell once. Pearce has some great roles in great movies, but whenever you think he’s going to get some momentum, he disappears for a few years, or does some really generic Hollywood fluff to pay the bills.

Kaned: Jude Law is a great comparison. They’re both excellent actors, both relatively handsome and strong screen presences, but for whatever reason they’re just not what mainstream audiences want to see. I’ve a feeling both will end up with some bad-ass TV starring role that’ll define their career.

I realise I contradicted myself there. What I mean is that they’re not what PAYING mainstream audiences want to see. But TV audiences will lap them up. Just look at Gary Sinise.
