Air Delivery

So you’ve got Universal Home Video’s Psycho Blu-ray out on 10.19, and the British version of what I presume is the exact same disc, via Universal Pictures UK, released on August 9th, or 13 days from now. So I’m figuring I’ll order the latter and watch it way before. Except (and here’s where the dumb part comes in) I’m not 100% certain if British Bluray is playable on a US non-multi-region Bluray player. I’m really that clueless.

  1. Depends on your player – if yours is region free, or multi-region you are good to go. The majors internationally are pretty diligent regarding region coding – the indies less so

  2. “I’m really that clueless.” Well, nice of you to be upfront about it.

If the same studio is releasing the title in different territories, it is EXTREMELY likely that the product will be region-coded for the appropriate territories. That $100 you wanted to bet on some upcoming comic-book movie featuring an eye stabbing? I put that money on the notion that you won’t be able to play the UK disc on your US non-multi region Blu-ray player. Which means you can give me the disc for my birthday (August 8), as I myself have a multi-region Blu-ray machine. If you’re really nice I’ll let you watch it with me on my properly calibrated plasma display. If the fucking thing is fixed by then.

Seriously, though, with big studio releases that’s the rule. Exceptions only tend to happen when different companies hold different rights. The Italian Blu-ray of “A Fistful of Dollars,” for instance, which is reputed to be far superior to the domestic MGM disc, is in fact region free. (Someday, when my plasma display is fixed, I’ll actually watch it and know for myself.) But the Italian version is not on MGM. You see what I’m saying here.

  3. I seriously hope the British version is playable on the PS3. Barring any differences in picture, I’m an absolute sucker for awesome packaging.

  4. It’ll be region free Jeff. Universal, like WB, don’t region code their blu-rays. You’re good to go I’d say

  5. Man, FFC BETTER release AN in the CORRECT aspect ratio. Sick of htat fucking 2:20 bullshit he and Storrarrororo have put on every fucking DVD or LD release of the pic since forever. the ONLY time I have seen ANY of AN in the correct ratio is the bits of it shown in VISIONS OF LIGHT. Here’s hoping. Between this, PATHS OF GLORY, CRUMB, THIN RED LINE and the complete LOST, this is going to be a very happy Blu Ray time for HHH.

  6. “If the same studio is releasing the title in different territories, it is EXTREMELY likely that the product will be region-coded for the appropriate territories. ”

    - On the contrary, with no PAL/NTSC support to worry about, most of the major studios are now enjoying the fact that they can save money by releasing exactly the same disc in multiple territories, just with different screen-printing (e.g for local certificates) and packaging.
