Michael Caine’s character either only owns one grey collarless shirt and brown cord jacket or he just doesn’t change his clothes for weeks on end. I can think of no other explanation as to why he’s wearing the same outfit at LAX as he is weeks earlier in Paris. If that’s not meant to completely fucking telegraph the ending of the film I don’t know what else is.

That’s the stupidest shit I’ve seen, but it made me laugh. The “Dark Knight sucked” at the end ruins it.

I liked Inception, but people were (spoiler alert) starting to snicker every time it cut back to the endlessly falling van. Nolan needs an editor who has the guts to say, “hey man, let’s tighten up act three here, this has gone on long enough.” And Nolan still can’t film action very well; he has that awful disease that Peter Jackson has wherein you film action in too tight so you can’t really tell what’s going on. Those guys need to watch Avatar to see how it’s done.
That was actually pretty amusing.
Inception needed no lessons from Avatar (except maybe the money-making ones), thank you veddy much.
The last act definitely didn’t need “tightening up”, either, IMHO. That climax was a sustained mini-masterpiece in and of itself, I liked how the scenarios continued to branch even further out with every additional dream. It was like a matreshka doll version of an action sequence, beautifully orchestrated by a master filmmaker.

The kids are probably nine when they’re sitting on the beach, and eleven when at home. So no answers there.

I could tell perfectly what was going on from a visual perspective the first time through. And I think Inception shows pretty remarkable growth in terms of Nolan as an action director – the hallway sequence is a brilliant set-piece and the first-level streetside shootout is top-notch.
Your criticism is more valid in regards to something like The A-Team, which is literally incoherent whenever the action kicks up.
I have to corroborate the report of laughter at the slow motion falling (and cutting back to it repeatedly). It’s like The Poseidon Adventure: you don’t want a lot of shots that cuts away from the first person action to show master shots of the ship sinking and let you know what kind of timeframe you’re on.
By the way, I think it’s a fool’s errand to try and get the clues as to whether or not the ending was a dream, because Nolan cuts corners all the time. How the hell do they all survive the car crash without suffering any injury? It’s like how Two Face miraculously survives a multiple roll over in TDK without a scratch, or how the Joker just happens to know when a bus is going to come crashing through the bank.

You might want to try watching these movies with your eyes open and ears peeled next time. You’re missing some really basic and important plot details here…

I’m a huge fan of Inception, but personally I do agree that Nolan could still up his game in terms of action scenes. I think he’s always been a very capable director in terms of chase scenes, and for me the chase on-foot in Mombassa is the best executed action set-piece in the movie. I think it’s true, whether you prefer Inception to Avatar or not, that Nolan probably could learn a little about staging action sequences from Cameron. (And equally Cameron could learn a lot about style and originality from Nolan.) I think directing action is a dying art-form – i can’t see any of the younger directors who can do it with the precision and panache of a Mann, or de Palma, or a Peckinpah.

Yeah, montage and rapid pacing have generally taken the place of geography, blocking, coherent physical logic etc.
Nolan could still learn from Cameron about directing action; Cameron is one of the masters. Spielberg, Bigelow, and Greengrass (shakycam aside) are among the few others in English language cinema.
The Zero G stuff in Inception seemed strangely under-developed to me — a few cool shots rather than a full-fledged action setpiece. I liked the falling van shots and all the arty time-extended stuff because they evoked a mood and style that are rare in blockbuster movies.

Reminds me of the time my cousin was complaining to me about her problems with Pulp Fiction because she couldn’t understand how Travolta came back to life for the last third of the movie after getting shot in the bathroom.
This same cousin also once watched a commercial for Red Lobster that was made to look like a Jaws movie trailer, called Crab Legs 2. After the ad ended, she said, “I want to see that!”

My father, who went to Georgetown and Michigan Law and was a managing partner of a major law firm, so ostensibliy a smart guy, continues to complain about this to this day. I told him to wait for the DVD on Inception.
Also have the “case closed!” people really started already? This is the Sopranos finale all over again. Put into it what you will. I can’t report any teeth-nashing in either of my two showings of it, people seemed more amused and buzzed about it. Funny video though, even if it goes on too long, just like every sketch these days. And all of my comments.
