Is the red rage effect -- Danny Trejo's character literally becoming Hellboy red -- a trailer-only effect or part of the film? It's mildly cool, I'll grant that, but also a way for director Robert Rodriguez to say "you get what we're doing, right? We're fucking around and don't care all that much so why not throw in a comic-book-styled visual signature thing?"

A lot of the shots in that trailer are reprocessed versions of shots we've seen before, so I'm reasonably certain it's a trailer-only effect.
I've long contended what Rodriguez really needs is creative pushback from a collaborator, so I have to say the fact that he has a co-director on this makes me more interested than I would be if it were another Rodriguez one-man-band extravaganza. I realize Maniquis' only credits have been on other Troublemaker productions so it's as likely to be sycophancy as a meeting of the minds, but still. Somewhere near the end of SPY KIDS 2 Rodriguez lost my allegiance and nothing he's done since then has really charmed me at all. (That said, I'm excited for the new GRINDHOUSE blu-ray because that really was some of the best time I've spent in a movie theater in the past five years.)

Well, I suppose it's all a matter of how you define "care." I mean, you know the logistical difficulties involved in making a film, so obviously there's going to be some consideration put into pretty much every decision. Hence, even the appearance of "fucking around" is practically overdetermined. No? Or do you mean "care" as in care about your delicate sensibilities?

A few things going on here:
1. Intimidated by the Glenn Kenny/Criterion/New York Times types, Jeff enjoys a healthy, comfortable feeling of cinematic superiority over the Comic-Con crowd.
2. Jeff is a self-hating "Eloi" more taken with these types of pictures than he dare admit (how many posts on on Rodriguez/Predators/whateversnext compared to the number of posts on, say, last year's Summer Hours or Everlasting Moments?)
Jeff, what the fuck do you expect from "Machete"?

Glenn: While I certainly take your point and agree that Jeff is being too flip in suggesting Rodriguez might not "care" ... if there's any commercial filmmaker who has been able to minimize logistical difficulties and the concomitant consideration they require, it's Rodriguez. If any filmmaker's fucking around isn't overdetermined, it's his. Ever since he went DV (which also allowed him to be more financially independent), I've gotten a strong streak of first draftism from his stuff, and not just the scripts.

Tell me a movie in which Robert Rodriguez wasn't fucking around? Every single movie he makes is a joke.

After seeing this trailer, I don't think I'll see the muvee after this.....in light of what's happening in Mexico with all the headless bodies and burned bodies and death and destruction...this looks too too way over the top for me. I love Michele Rodriguez, she's one badass bi**Tch but Rodriguez may have taken gore to another level.

This movie looks awesome. I think it might be Rodriguez's masterpiece. If he wants to become the Mexican-American Andy Sidaris that's fine with me.

When exactly did youtube start allowing nudity? They've been so incredibly doctrinaire about this stuff in the past. I realize that this was ripped from IGN and posted on youtube, but usually youtube's flesh-seeking robots catch this stuff quickly...

While the "Actionitis" Jeff described in an earlier post is on clear and proud display near the end of the trailer I'll note that a lot of the action scenes appear to be more simply staged and instead seam to rely on the brutality of the kill for their punch instead of a bullet ballet, etc. Perhaps the precursor to the rise of the escalating action craziness was the turn towards PG13 and minimal blood and off-screen kills in mainstream Hollywood movies after the Regan era.

Not that I am going to see this, but WTF is this thing going to come out? Seems like it's been talked about forever.
Finally saw INCEPTION today. Anyone who doesn't think Nolan hasn't kicked it up a notch is seriously deluding themselves. This is big time, master class, kitchen sink, big budget talent. God bless him.

Pulling out a guys guts and swinging out of a window with them is like something I would have come up with when I was 11. Which is why I love Robert Rodriguez.

Do you think it pains some of these chicks-- from above-the-title stars like Alba, Rodriguez and Lohan, on down to the supporting players to the naked vixens willing to strip down-- to act like Danny Trejo is some irresistible sex symbol?
Like, YEAH, I get it, Danny Trejo is COOL and BAD-ASS to film geeks, but doesn't really mean I want to see Jessica Alba slinking up on this grizzled 70-year-old man with utterly zero appeal to women whatsoever.
Hey, MARK BOONE JUNIOR might be a cult "cool" actor from Memento and Sons of Anarchy, etc, he's pretty much THE WHITE DANNY TREJO, but if some spazzboy geek director made an ENTIRE MOVIE about this super-niche character actor, then surrounded him with the Maxim Hot 100, it would be absolutely fucking ridiculous to the public at large.
But good to know if JOE SPINNELL were still with us, he'd get a nice career second wind AND more onscreen vag than he'd ever seen, because RR or QT would have him in some movie grinding on Amber Heard.
