Just to answer your question, Mel had been (most prominently) doing fundraising letters for Tom McClintock in the CA lt. governor's race in 06, right as his last incident hit. McClintock had to stop sending the letters and rejected Gibson's appointment. The letter is full of references to meddlesome regulations, abusive taxes, predators stalking us, etc. McClintock got Gibson's attention by being very religiously conservative, but this was all very revealing of very middle-of-the-road Republican viewpoints.
