M.I.A.

A Hollywood Reporter story by Stephen Galloway announced yesterday that Academy reps can’t find Jean Luc Godard in order to give him the good news that he’s been chosen to receive an honorary Oscar next February. And so Movieline‘s Stu Van Airsdale has created a Jean-Luc Godard “‘missing” poster. Hilarious. I’m guessing Godard is just ducking them — he doesn’t want the damn award and doesn’t want to get into a whole dialogue dispute and have to listen to endless cajolings.

  1. I have to admit that, while the arm’s-length, snooty quality of his films can be offputting at first, Godard is a highly original and interesting filmmaker whose films are always interesting and unpredictable. I love watching his work simply for the fact that I have no clue as to where he’s going and what he’s going to do next, which is unlike 99.9% of the films that are made today. There is just no predictability factor in Godard’s films, which makes even his most radical films fun to watch. It helps that the guy is effortless with his handling of film language and techinque. Say what you want about his film’s content, but you can’t argue with the fact that the guy is a genius with shot composition and sound. “Alphaville’ is also one of the best sci-fi films ever made. It’s gritty, imaginative, funny and has some amazing single-take shots. And it would be great if Godard told the Academy to shove the award up their asses.

  2. I’d be evasive too, if QT’s remake of one of my films got more mainstream recognition than any of my work, and I had to settle for “In before he dies.”

  3. lapshin, I’m still trying to wrap my head around how you begin by saying Godard’s films have an “arm’s length, snooty quality” and then proceed to talk about how much you like them. what’s up with that? I guess you just like snooty films? anyways, this is just another lame attempt by the academy to be perceived as having the ability to recognize and reward genius. Ludicrous. He should make this the subject of his next film.

What? He named his production company after a Godard film but he hasn’t remade any of his work.

  5. Yeah, I don’t need to suss out the IP to figure that one out, Milkman LOL

The QT reference is a dead giveaway.

    Uh, Jeff, your move….

    ******* ******* **********

And if I was Goddard, I sure as hell wouldn’t want a lame, late tribute from the membership that now constitutes the Academy.

If they didn’t have the balls to even nominate one of my films, then just how much of an honor is it to get the “Oops, We Fucked Up” award from the same group?

  6. Every year they do this and every year someone bitches. It won’t even be on the regular broadcast anyhow. Godard rules tho :-)

  7. I would love to hear Daniel’s explanation of which Tarantino film is a remake of Band of Outsiders…. and to think I was almost missing that douche.

  8. well I’ve gotta say, Jackie Brown always reminded me of Bande Apart transplanted to LA, but I thought I was the only one who picked up on it. Aren’t you on the record as having never seen a Godard movie?
