Oscar Poker Got Game
Here’s the really long version (i.e., about an hour) plus the 20-minute cut of the debut podcast of Oscar Poker. Hats off to partner and colleague Sasha Stone of Awards Daily for making us both sound good as well as well as her technical expertise (i.e., she knows everything). We’ll show more discipline next time, but I have to say that the extended director’s cut flows along pretty well.
Nice job, kids!
I would say that your intro is WAY too long, Jeff. Sasha isn’t even heard during the first couple of minutes while you talk.
Also, did you guys have to get the rights to use that opening song?
fwiw: wells — this is sooooo good with sooooo much potential… don’t be afraid of long-form when it comes to podcasts….an hour really isn’t too long… i have no idea of your relationship with stone but i love the fact you two are comfortable enough to talk over each other…it makes a difference and you both sound great….you should probably up stone’s mic level because yours is audibly dominant but that’s nit picking….really, really good first effort… when it goes on itunes, i’ll most def subscribe and recommend…..
Not sure what I expected, but I was surprised to hear what Jeff’s voice sounds like. Very smooth, easy to listen to. I guess I expected it to be scratchier for some reason…
The show is very good. It flows, and the two of you have a nice rapport. The best moment was when Stone mentioned FDR’s story and you mentioned “Sunrise…”. It felt like two friends rigging and surprising each other, and that encapsulated it.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, but I have to say that I’m a fan of longer podcasts. An hour is perfectly fine, as long as there’s enough material to warrant it.
Wells to Ray DeRousse: Fuck rights.
Who came up with the unfortunate title: “Oscar Poker”?
i subscribe to several podcasts that run about an hour in length: diggnation, trs, wtf, comedy death ray, this week in tech….they all go long….’kevin pollak’s chat show’ actually reaches for two hours….when it comes to podcasts, it’s okay to go long…..
Only a few minutes in so far, but great work, Jeff.
Are these going to be available on iTunes?
I agree with those that say an hour is not too long. Can’t wait for this to be on itunes.
It was very good! Though, I still feel that title has to change.
If anyone can come up with a better title, Sasha and I are all ears. We started with the idea that the title has to be short but with the word “Oscar” in it so it would come up quickly on search engines. Without that requirement I would have gone with “As Rome Burns” or something similarly tangy that doesn’t allude to anything about the season. You try it. I just came up with “Oscar Poker” because it alludes to the awards-season game, the potential winner-take-all dynamic, the high stakes, the piles and piles of chips that each distributor throws in, and so on. I kinda liked Oscar Schmoscar, but I don’t think Sasha was knocked over by it.
As you threw my last comment out with the spam bathwater, I was going to suggest you call it “Oscar & The Grouch”…but I’m sure it was an accident.
Seriously, nice work on the first edition. The hour went fast and the topics chosen were good. Looking forward to the next edition.
Oscar Roulette?
@Jeff- well, I guess it doesn’t matter, then. But if legal issues arise and you need new intro/outro music, you can go to audio jungle. They have some great legal music for only 10-20 bucks.
As for a title, Oscar Poker is okay, but it doesn’t roll off the tongue. It’s still better than “The Golden Briefcase,” which is the name of the podcast at FirstShowing.
Jeff,
Interesting discussion and a good way to kick off. Yourself and Sasha are a good team and compliment / contrast one another nicely (great point she made for the end of Wall Street… and Sasha’s suggestion reminded me of the ending to Godfather II).
Your speaking voice is distinctly different from the voice I hear when I read your articles You have a lot greater empathy when you speak… but oddly, when you write you sound tough, or even more oddly, you read as someone who wants to sound tough. I first noticed it when you did that great phone interview with Fincher for Zodiac (Best Picture of 2007. FACT).
Oscar Roulette? The metaphor doesn’t fit. The awards-season game is not a game of pure chance. It’s about cards, chips, strategies, the odds, the psychology of the players, etc. If I could convince Sasha to change the name to Oscar Schmoscar, I would do that. At least it sounds catchy. It doesn’t mean anything, of course, but at least it shouts out NO MEANING in a flagrant what-does-ANYTHING-mean? sense.
I see your point. Sticking with the poker theme then, how about “Oscar Hold’Em: Bad Beats and Lucky Draws”.
Technically, it should be Oscar Hold’em, like Texas Hold’em.
‘Oscar Poker’ works for me. (“Poke her? I barely know her!) plus, it invokes The Sting.
To signify the full seductive sensation I’ll be thinking of this podcast as ‘Oscar Strip Poker.’
‘Oscar Reconnaissance’ has such a smooth jazzy rhythm, now that I’ve mentioned it somebody somewhere is gonna be using it soon.
Oscarred For Life
I’m enjoying this a lot, keep the podcasts coming.
“Oscar Mavericks”
You get your “Oscar’ for search purposes, it refers to your independence of opinion, plus it’s the title of a poker movie.
i’m afraid, for many, the term ‘maverick’ has been spoiled….
Oscar Poker is a great title. Because it makes sense, and ALSO sounds like a porn star name.
Will listen to this as soon as possible.
This is very good. Instead of a 20-minute version and a 1-hour version, I think a compromise of about 45-minutes will suffice.
Oscar Bait
The Oscar Pit
I hope you choose to keep the long format. I never felt the podcast to be “fat” – enjoyed the entire deal, and also loved getting to hear both you and Sasha – totally not what I expected voice-wise so that was a pleasant surprise. Very much looking forward to your next one.
