Exactly

Asked by Vulture to submit a one-sentence review of True Grit, Steve Heisler wrote the following yesterday at 12:02pm: “Grarrarggra garrgrgargarr garrg ggrggrg agrrargar arggg grgg.”

  1. I couldn’t disagree more. I saw this twice over the holiday weekend and thought it was even better the second time. I don’t get the label that this movie is simple and exercise or akin to homework assignment. It is a no nonsense kind of Western with vivid characters, great dialogue, suspense and action that is masterfully done. I can agree with Jeff that by the end is doesn’t have the same gut punch resonance of A SERIOUS MAN, but at the end of the second viewing I was really choked up. Not necessarily because of the movie, but because of the craft of the storytelling. Like a lot of people here, I sit through a lot of shit throughout the year and this represents everything that I love and hope for when I go to the movies.

  2. True Grit, for me, was the best movie I’ve seen. Next would be Unstoppable, the Fighter and the Joan Rivers documentary. All engaging, all the characters were “real” and lively. For me, it was all about the characters and the dialog and these movies had it in spades.

  3. But you know what, that’s what it really is at the end of the day…its just craft. Its getting a pass because the Coens know what they’re doing behind the camera and that most movies in this day and age just suck. Period.

This is not a bad movie in any way shape or form, but if you were to ask me if I was bored during the pic then I would say HELL YEAH!! I just didn’t care. This is a rarity for me but I have to agree with Wells on this 100%.

  4. True Grit is a very well made film with wonderful period-flavor dialogue, and dircted by two of the best filmmakers on the planet right now. But the dominant impression comes from Jeff Bridges going “grarrarggrr garrgrgargarr garrg ggrggrg agrrargar arggg grgg” a lot. That’s all the guy was saying. You know it’s true.

  5. Jeff, I loved True Grit, but the “grarrarara gararara gggarg” thing is true. There was a slow point in the middle of the movie where I was worried it would fall apart because there was just too much Jeff Bridges doing the “grarrragagaga” thing, but thankfully the Coens pulled it through and the third act was fantastic.

The soft middle makes this movie a B+ for me, but I’m in the camp who thinks The Hudsucker Proxy is one of the most underrated Coen movies.
