Purity of Jail
Paul Haggis, Sean Penn and Harvey Weinstein “have joined forces with British-Iranian actress and Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) spokesperson Nazanin Boniadi to condemn the harsh sentence imposed on Iranian film director Jafar Panahi,” a statement reads. Panahi was recently sentenced to six years of Iranian prison confinement plus a 20-year ban on filmmaking for “propaganda against the state.”
Why, I’m asking myself, are Haggis, Penn and Weinstein standing alone? Each and every filmmaker the world over needs to co-sign this petition. It should have 5,000 signatures. Could it be that some are having difficulty rousing themselves into full protest mode over this matter? Perhaps because they can’t relate to the motives of a filmmaker who, as I suggested on 12.20, appears to be more in love with the idea of matryrdom than the necessity of creation?
Those looking to urge Iranian authorities to overturn Panahi’s sentence need to visit www.amnestyusa.org.
There’s also the fact his films aren’t nearly as widely seen as, say, Chinatown or The Pianist.
I seem to recall a story late last week about a group of directors, including Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone and Ang Lee, also condemning Iran’s treatment of Mr. Panahi .It might have come out of a film festival in South Korea.
Will Sean Penn also condemn the artists imprisoned by Castro in Cuba? Don’t hold your breath on that one.

This paragraph is astounding for so many reasons.
“Why, I’m asking myself, are Haggis, Penn and Weinstein standing alone? Each and every filmmaker the world over needs to co-sign this petition.”
Probably because they read your original post about this a few weeks back… and think Panahi is a big pussy for never leaving Iran when he had the chance. Wasn’t that the gist of it?
Something like that. The man could not leave his country, he’s in jail now and Wells, a guy who can’t bear to spend a weekend in another country without top-notch Wifi, can’t help but get in a dig at him. So fucking gross.
Wells to mrksltsky The guy decides to submit to the will of a tyrannical, politically driven court, knowing full well what the government’s attitude is about any artist who sympathizes with the green movement, and he’s not indulging in a bit of a martyr complex? Oh…okay. Sorry for thinking otherwise. Thanks for setting me straight.
Um, not to put too fine a point on it, or get ad hominem, or anything, but really; to what extent are you aware of the exact circumstances of Panahi’s situation? How free his movements are, etcetera? It’s pretty clear that Panahi wants to affect change in his own country…how, precisely, this translates into his having a martyr complex of some sort takes, I think, some stretching on your part. And frankly, it sounds like grandstanding. You think Panahi’s such a loathesome pussy, cause he didn’t sneak out of his country when he supposedly had the chance? Well, what’s to stop you from sneaking into Iran and putting a cap in his ass to show him who’s boss, you’re so goddamn macho? Oh, wait, I was gonna try not to go ad hominem; …damn you and your provocations!
So being sentenced to prison is the same thing as “submitting to the will” of his government? I don’t see where you’re getting this idea that he had a choice in the matter. You feel the same way about Nelson Mandela?
Grover Dill: you hit the nail on the head with that one. I guess Sean Penn only likes certain crazy dictators, not all of them.
Grover Dill & Michael:
Regardless of what you think of his politics, Sean Penn gets more accomplished during his morning shit than the two of you will ever accomplish during your entire miserable existences.
Damn, first comment beat me to it.
