That’s It For Franco
In an interview with Moveline‘s Elvis Mitchell, 127 Hours star and Oscar telecast co-host James Franco says the following: “Look, Social Network is about new technology and how people are communicating now? Or it’s supposed to be? They don’t deal with any of that! It’s a very classically structured movie and classically made movie. [People] just want the old. They want more of the old, boring stuff. People sitting around talking.”
What do you mean, that’s it?
Finally, an actor is saying and doing things that doesn’t make him sound like a robot or an old out of touch douche. Franco is engaged and takes chances.
I know you hate the fact that he’s hosting the Oscars while being nominated, but who cares? I think it’s cool. He’s actively involved with the history, not just sitting back, hoping for an award.
He actually makes a very fair point (LOL@the title of this entry…what’s that supposed to mean? Black-listed?), but he loses a little bit of credibility when he pimps 127 Hours as “cutting-edge” out of the blue.
No. Enter the Void was “new.” I actually thought Buried was a little more innovative — and certainly less structured — in the way it approached the whole “guy stuck in one spot” aesthetic.
There’s probably a good reason why the Oscar host has never been a nominee before. You need a certain impartiality, almost to the point of detached bemusement, to do a good job with that kinda gig. If you slide too far over into irreverence, though, you run the risk of losing the audience as the more over-sensitive members will detect a sense of malice, whether it’s actually present or not.
I hated 127 Hours. Annoying visual tricks can’t cover up an uninteresting movie.
Van Sant did the whole lost, trapped in nature thing better in Gerry.
It also makes me a little upset that Into The Wild didn’t come out this year. So much better than that movie. Imagine if ’07 had 10 nominees? Could have been an amazing class
Atonement
Michael Clayton
Juno
There Will Be Blood
No Country For Old Men
Assassination of Jesse James
Into The Wild
American Gangster
Sweeney Todd
Gone Baby Gone
Zodiac would be in that list, not American Gangster, nor Gone Baby Gone. And There Will Be Blood would still artistically whip the living shit out of pretty much every other selection, as it did in 2007.
Gone Baby Gone‘s a pretty great film. It would definitely make the cut on my own personal 10 from ’07 (a pretty strong year, btw).
“And There Will Be Blood would still artistically whip the living shit out of pretty much every other selection, as it did in 2007.”
“As it did in 2007?” It didn’t win an Oscar for script or picture (NCFOM). My own personal preference from that year was Zodiac, but I love all three of those flicks almost completely equally.
Zodiac didn’t receive a nomination anywhere. The other two did, and quite frankly are better.
There Will Be Blood would still have a poor score, a weak Dano, and laughably over the top ending.
I’m assuming “That’s it” for Franco means Jeff is writing him off because Franco doesn’t love Social Network as much as he does?
It always has to be kept in mind that Wells is sometimes being silly and playing up his shtick to some degree… But has there EVER been a movie he’s gone this hard to bat for, where TSN is like a firstborn or a damsel whose honor is to be defended at all cost? I’ve been a regular reader for about four years now… but before that? GoodFellas? Pulp Fiction? Heat? Boogie Nights? Fight Club? Insert Your Own Personal Fave of the Last Couple Decades? Wells go THIS HARD backing any of those?
It’s a very good movie, but it’s kinda like issuing taunts and threatening blacklists and BEATDOWNS on anyone who doesn’t think ABSENCE OF MALICE is the best movie of 1981.

LexG:
As I recall, Jeff was apoplectic over the snub of Zodiac a few years ago.
I have felt that his full bore support for TSN is somehow tied to this.
“It always has to be kept in mind that Wells is sometimes being silly and playing up his shtick to some degree… But has there EVER been a movie he’s gone this hard to bat for, where TSN is like a firstborn or a damsel whose honor is to be defended at all cost?”
I dunno…he was pretty militant about Zodiac and The Hurt Locker. Thing about those films, though (esp. the latter), is they had plenty of time to stew and simmer before their respective Oscars were held. TSN came out less than four months ago, so the iron’s pretty much been scorching non-stop, and will probably continue until the ceremony’s held.
Franco is just saying, in so many words, what Fincher himself has said about The Social Network.
With Munich and Crash obviously being the flip-side of that equation.
In a parallel universe, Jeff is praising Franco for his blunt, truth-to-power stance and showing that yet again he is not the pretty-boy Tiger Beat poster everyone labeled him as when he first showed up.
But because he dares to suggest the emperor has now clothes…
“Franco is just saying, in so many words, what Fincher himself has said about The Social Network.”
i can imagine fincher saying to his wife, ” . . . of all my movies THIS is the one their panties are soaked over, huh? unfuckingbelievable.”
and i actually liked TSN. i liked it more than i expected to but now i’m actively campaigning against it because of the ridiculous attitude of its more vocal fanbase.
“and i actually liked TSN. i liked it more than i expected to but now i’m actively campaigning against it because of the ridiculous attitude of its more vocal fanbase.”
And that is probably why it is going to lose to the mediocre — perfectly fine but nothing exceptional – King’s Speech. Dumb it down, make fun for the smart people, and, by all means, whenever possible, act like a petty 2nd grader.
What, no crosshairs — er, “surveyor’s marks” — over that video of Franco?
127 Hours cutting edge? I suppose it was in a literal sort of way. I have to laugh, though, at Franco dismissing TSN as more of the same old boring people sitting around talking stuff. How ironic. Maybe we should just make movies about cocky adventurers falling into canyon crevices and talking to themselves while mustering the courage to cut their arm off in the name of survival, shot with every twitchy cinematic trick in the book to keep us engaged.
Black Swan was “edgy” but the truth is, not a one of the ten films for Oscar is really cutting edge or anything. They’re all well told stories (or I assume as much – I haven’t seen Winter’s Bone yet).
I liked 127 Hours, but how different is it from Cast Away in the end? Both are about a guy trapped in a place he can’t get away from until he thinks of using his resources in a new way. Or am I just over-simplifying things? Doesn’t matter. Both are well done.
I agree with you, Dan. I think those two films ultimately share more in common than they don’t (i.e. the visual tics that paul kolas is referring to).
I liked them both, too, but I’m into that loner, “man vs. nature” sort of story.
I prefer Cast Away, even with the overly sappy Helen Hunt rain kiss
Sorry James but 127 Hours wasn’t cutting edge because “I stayed in one place for the entire movie.” Did you even watch your movie? IMO Buried was better at presenting that “one place, entire time” experience, because the entire movie was literally Ryan Reynolds in a wooden coffin for the ENTIRE duration of the film with no cutaways. Editing away to hallucinations, memories, and dreams isn’t cutting edge. And I even liked 127 Hours more than Buried.
That was awesome. I like that he doesn’t care his comments may jeopardize his Oscar chances. I’m rooting for him to win Best Actor.
Still, got to disgree with Franco a bit. On the whole I did like Boyle’s presentation of the story. There are moments where it didn’t quite work for me. The epilogue is “old, boring stuff”. Adding that shot of the real Ralston and his wife and baby was the sort of thing Shyamalan would do. Also the hallucinations / flashbacks of Ralston’s family. Felt nothing.
“Also the hallucinations / flashbacks of Ralston’s family. Felt nothing.”
Exactly. Plus we get a lame Dido song.
Don’t be dissing M Night
Of *course* Rashad likes Shyamalan. Of course he does.
Judging by some of his “art” projects, I bet Franco thinks “127 Hours” was pretty much a for-hire gig as well. This guy is so friendly and off-center that no one seems to mind the honest truth, which is that he holds Hollywood in contempt.
Which is good, I feel the need to say.
