Begins Now

“Answering the Oscar red carpet query ‘Who made your dress?’ with ‘Probably some underage Vietnamese guttersnipe’ would be a nice change.” — Steven Weber on witsream.com/oscars (about an hour ago).

  1. You have to wonder if anyone will dare show up in a Galliano gown after his recent arrest for anti-semitic remarks in France…have to believe his dresses are being frantically ditched at the last minute.

  2. “I hope Winter’s Bone wins. It’s about Annette Bening cutting her arm off after it gets stuck in Julianne Moore (I haven’t seen any movies).” -Jenny Johnson

  3. Franco is cool, but there is no way he and Hathaway won’t “bomb” worse than Gervais did at the Globes. Gervais wasn’t at his best but was still highly entertaining, while I cannot remember the last Oscar host that I would call highly entertaining. I wish they’d let Bill Maher host.

  4. Bill Maher is not right for the venue. He’s at his best sparring with people, not doing monologues. In my adult life, Steve Martin did the best job with it…

The fashion is the least interesting thing about the show, but I suppose it draws in the Us magazine demographic…

  5. Thankfully, I’m boarding a plane for the next 16 hrs back home and will get to avoid this crap. Although I will probably see something about it online after i wake up.

  6. Gee, “guttersnipe” is a little on-the-nose, no?

Always interesting when wannabe “edgy” humor actually goes into the moral grey area that the joke’s maker didn’t intend, leading to questions, in this case, of whether Mr. Weber’s hands are themselves so clean (they’re not) and finally to the question of whether he cares enough to want to do more than make “edgy” jokes about it. He doesn’t, and none of us do either, which begs the question of why bring it up. Just saying, of course.

  7. Bill Maher’s monologue style would be a lead balloon with the Oscar crowd. Crystal and Martin were good. Would like to see Jim Carrey do it. Heck, let Craig Ferguson take a crack at it.

  8. (seeing into the future…. Jeffrey’s Oscar live blog)

“‘The Lost Thing’ just won Best Animated Short Subject. What does that mean for a possible ‘Social Network’ upset over ‘The King’s Speech’? One can only speculate, (and hope). We’ll see.”

  9. I don’t care about how Maher would go over with the Oscar crowd, just how enjoyable it would be for me to view. I enjoy a funny host who “bombs” with the crowd in the theater, but in reality was funny. Gervais did it at the Globes. His reaction in the room made me cringe, but it was pretty enjoyable. Ok, how about Steven Wright?

  10. Maher monologues suck, as does his stand-up, which I’m amazed he even still tries to do. He’s dynamite on the fly and hosting a panel. Why try to drag him into something he’s not suited to?

Eventually they’re going to figure out the best Oscar host is no one. It would flow just fine from presenter to presenter. Imagine the Grammys with better writing. They could even get it under 3 hours.

  11. My theory is that the greatest disappointment of Bill Maher’s life is that he won’t host THE TONIGHT SHOW. I think Bill idolizes Johnny Carson enough that he’d mute the REAL TIME persona and do a Carsonesque hosting job if the slim chance of hosting the Academy Awards occurs.
