Clock-wise, Europe is a much better place to compose Hollywood Elsewhere riffs, and Los Angeles is probably the worst. if you’re in Cannes or Rome or Paris you can start working at 10 am and post your first story by 11 am or noon, at which point New Yorkers (i.e., six hours behind) won’t even be waking up for another hour or two, and Los Angelenos have just gone to bed. You’re way ahead of the game! But in LA you wake up every day in a losing position, always behind the New York crowd, never “first.” You might have the “most” in terms of original reporting or an interesting personality, etc., but “first” is what seems to matter to most readers. The only way you can turn L.A. to your advantage is to file at 11 pm or midnight, but I’m usually whipped at that hour.

  1. That only works when there is some interesting film related story that originates in Europe like things out of the Cannes Film Fest.

    For stories that originate in LA and need commenting on, being in Europe is a disadvantage, so you’d be at a disadvantage for most of the year.

  4. We know you (mostly) live there Jeff, but (how to put this?) NY is not actually the only important market in the world re film, especially for commentators on this site.

    LA actually produces about 90% of the English language film news on a daily basis, so it could be argued that NY is actually always over a day behind. That has always been my anecdotal experience.

    And I see above the spam cares not for where you are when you post.

  5. Funnily enough, as a UK resident my first thought when I heard Jeff was relocating to LA was “Great, now I have to wait an extra 3 hours for Jeff to start posting through the day!”
