Cuts and Keepers
I’m trusting/assuming that the late Ronni Chasen will make the Oscars’ In Memoriam montage, despite the fact that no one in Eloi-land will recognize her face. Chasen really mattered to this town, so we’ll see what the Oscar producers are made of when this segment airs. Who won’t make the cut besides Tura Santana, Zelda Rubinstein, Eddie Fisher, Corey Haim and Erich Segal? I’ll be deeply offended if they don’t include Kenneth Mars, Maury Chaykin, Maria Schneider and Ronald Neame. The locks, I’m guessing, are Tony Curtis, Dennis Hopper, Jill Clayburgh, Irvin Kershner, John Barry, Arthur Penn, Dino De Laurentiis, Susannah York, Blake Edwards, Peter Yates, Gloria Stuart, Leslie Neilsen, Sally Menke, Lena Horne, Robert Culp, Lynn Redgrave, John Forsythe, Peter Graves, Anne Francis, Claude Chabrol, Pete Postlethwaite and Patricia Neal. That’s a total of 27 including Chasen and minus the unlikely five. How many names do they usually go with?
How are you figuring Corey Haim won’t make the cut? Lost Boys, Lucas, License to Drive… guy was a pretty big deal to Gen X and had an enormous fan base in his heyday who remembers him fondly– didn’t they have an entire segment devoted to John Hughes last year? Haim absolutely should and certainly will be in the montage.
Wells to LexG: People who (a) die young due to self-destruction and (b) croak long after their careers have peaked are always the first to be cut when they throw these things together.
Haim will definitely make the cut. (You forgot about DREAM A LITTLE DREAM, Lex).
I don’t know how you cut out John Barry. In fact, I expect a full musical montage for him. I think he had a far greater impact on cinematic history than at least half of your definites list.
Wells to drbob: you’re right — Barry belongs with the locks. I’ve fixed that. I didn’t cut him out previously — I said “I’ll be deeply offended” if they don’t include him.
A lot of people were pissed when Brad Refro was left out a few years ago. I don’t think they want to make the same mistake with Haim.
Who gets the final swell? Curtis, Hopper or Nielsen?
They did 34 names last year.
Did Robert Culp make movies? I thought he was a tv guy. As for Corey, the final report was his death was not due to drugs. Of course, if he had been a heavy user, previously, it might have weakened his body.
Culp did Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.
Betty Garrett?
June Havoc, Kathryn Grayson
I do love how ignorance of movie publicists equals “EloI” in Wells’ book. People with real jobs just can’t win with Jeff, can they?
I’d also ask by what logic Jeff figures that an ex-husband of Liz Taylor’s and the father of one of the ceremony’s most reliable special-material writers (um, that would be Carrie Fisher) will be snubbed. But I’m not sure I want to know. It’s nice to see Jeff hasn’t even waited for the event to happen before starting to stoke his resentments about it. “I’ll be deeply offended if…”, priceless.
Garrett, ON THE TOWN and MY SISTER EILEEN.
Another inclusion: Robert Boyle. There are a fair number of below the liners every year (and of course every Oscar nominee should be included).
Kenny: Eddie Fisher appeared in two movies (Farrah Fawcett was in at least 12). So, he may not make the cut. Maybe Carrie will make them do it, but she didn’t have a very good relationship with the man, did she? What does your father-in-law think?
There are always a good 7 or 8 below the line people included…I think they include a name from every branch of the Academy. Chasen is a lock.
Culp and Graves are both too TV to make the cut…Forsyth might not make the cut based on the fact his biggest success was in TV despite the lengthy film credits, though I bet he does.
It’s probably too late to include Mars, Garrett, maybe York.
My guess is Zelda gets the nod just to look inclusive…she was a “little person” after all.
Tony Curtis gets the final “Star” moment.
When they show Zelda Rubinstein, they can use this prescient quote from Poltergeist:
“There is no death. It is only a transition to a different sphere of consciousness. ”
Prager: Yeah, I know Fisher was only in two movies (and thank God for that), and that he was pretty widely disliked, including by his daughter, but by the same token, he did represent the Kind Of Entertainment the Academy fogeys (the ones who are gonna give Jeff an aneurysm by giving TKS Best Picture) liked. So I still say tribal clannishness will beat out actual personal animosity by a nose and Fisher will make the cut.
I imagine by this time you’ve gathered just what a jam-packed evening I am having.
I have not consulted my father-in-law on this matter, thanks. Kind of a creepy question. But that’s the internet, for you.
Erick Segal’s a lock.
The Academy missing an opportunity to show a clip of McGraw and O’Neal in their prime, with Francis Lai’s score swelling in the background? Get out of here!
The most shameful omission will be Art Gilmore, who narrated hundreds, if not thousands, of trailers back in the Golden Age, and did numerous other voiceovers (including the beloved series of Joe McDoakes shorts) and occasional on-screen appearances. He was 98 and may well have been the most oft-heard voice in movie history.
No Forsyth? You’re on drugs, Strangeways. The guy starred in two HItchock movies and IN COLD BLOOD. He’s a lock.
Graves is in THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and AIRPLANE and Roger Corman movies= in.
Culp is in BOB & CAROL, TED & ALICE, HICKEY & BOGGS, THE PELICAN BRIEF= in.
And it’s settled; Cadavra is Dave Kehr.
Fisher certainly contributed more to Hollywood than Michael Jackson.
Just checking back in to give you props for calling the Corey Haim omission. I may be looking through my biased colored glasses, but I thought he should have been in.
