Lockout

With no reported change in AMPAS attitude/policy since yesterday, it appears as if Deadline‘s Michael Fleming‘s Oscar-covering press credential ban is being upheld. Nikki Finke revealed early yesterday afternoon that Deadline‘s press pass had been revoked over Finke having posted a spoiler-heavy rundown of the show’s schedule.

“There’s a long history of entertainment journalists besides us publishing multiple scoops about the show during the week leading up to the Academy Awards broadcast, including this year,” Finke claimed. “But none of those news outlets were banned from coverage. True, until now, no media outlet has ever published so many scoops as Deadline did yesterday. The fact that we did our reporting job too well put the Academy on tilt.”

Finke speculated that the revoke order was apparently due to the particular ire of AMPAS exec administrator Ric Robertson. I’m guessing that Robertson didn’t pop his cork entirely over Deadline‘s scoop (although that was obviously the main reason), but also because Finke prefaced the rundown by saying “what’s confirmed at this point looks to be yet another snorefest…the highlights or lowlights depending on your point of view when it comes to the overly long and usually boring Oscar telecast.”

  1. It’s weird that Nikki’s so obsessive about covering something she claims to hate. Won’t not being able to cover the Oscars make for a nicer Sunday for her? She can pop some Xanax, read a book, have a glass of wine, call a friend.

  2. She must have known that was a risk. She made her choice.

    On the positive side: Each year, AMC Theaters runs some sort of Oscar movie marathon across the country. Last year, they slplit them five and five over two Saturdays. This year, they did that again, but they ran an overnight 10-film marathon.

    Last year, I talked my way into a lone screening of Inglorious Basterds. The place was half sold, at best. This year, I went down to the overnight marathon to se if I could talk my way into Winter’s Bone and Inception. The whole thing was sold out.

    The Oscars seem to have captured the public interest this year.

  3. She later deleted the derogotory Oscar comments, even though she would not admit anything was out of line. I’ll be watching, even though I have no real interest in the nominated films. I guess it’s just the total “event.” Plus, I want to see what everyone is wearing…although it won’t be as fun as the Grammy awards.

    Hopefully other organizations will follow suit and cut off communications with her. She needs to be driven out of town with pitchforks and torches. Or whatever it is they used to do with witches.

  5. I am soo over Deadline. I am not even in the industry but for her to post some of those spoilers via thread headlines pissed me off. At least give your visitors the option to read them or not. Made me realize she doesn’t care about her readers, just being first. And don’t start me on her pathetic lawsuit against The Wrap.

    It’s not like her content is anything special. So she breaks news five minutes faster than anyone else (on occasion). Big deal!!! Oh, oh, oh, and look. here comes The Hollywood Reporter with their own unfirewalled blog. Nikki will be irrelevant in two weeks.

Funny, I was talking to my sister in Palm Springs and mentioned the surprise guest monologue later in the show and some other details from the Deadline Hollywood piece.Now, I’m beginning to feel guilty about being a spoiler. But to me, it does sound like an interesting show with a few new ideas.I ignored or wrote off Nikki Finke’s introductory cheap shots.

  8. spoiling the surprise host is a shitty thing, since that’s not real news it’s just entertainment. But spoiling the order of the Oscars seems like a fair thing to do, because people can actually now know, “Oh, they’re not going to give anything important for that hour or so.”
