Slice and Dice
If I never see another movie about fierce and growly Asian guys leaping around and fighting each other with swords, it’ll be too soon. I’m serious. If powerful forces were to sent a rep to my door with this message — “You will never again see another Asian-machismo sword-fight movie in your life” — my answer would be, “Okay…I can live with that.” And I’m saying this as someone has has three real-deal swords in his apartment, including a samurai sword.
Well the good news is you won’t have to worry about it being number one at the box office and having to write something about it happening. Crouching Tiger was ten years ago. I think it’d be safe to say that foreign language films peaked in North America back then.
What “Asian-machismo sword-fight” movies have you seen, exactly? I mean recently. It’s not like there’s a glut hitting theatres. And 13 Assassins is one of the best of them. Saw it at TIFF. It’s got one of the most-rousing non-stop samurai fights ever. You should give it a chance as I’d love to read your reaction to a film you have seen rather than to one you haven’t.
This is essentially like saying, “If I see another movie where a German dude brandishes a gun, I’ll snap!”
There really aren’t a lot of these types of pictures being made. And if there are, none are as good as this one. This movie is genuinely awesome. Really great battle scenes, a light touch from Miike, great last half hour. I mean, if you really like movies, you’ll get a kick out of this.
I heard good things about 13 Assassins, but the only Magnolia flick I’m gonna haul ass to see at the Nuart is Hobo. Maybe I’ll get lucky, though, and this will get a re-screening at the New Beverly.
This doesn’t look like an over the top, wire dancing, fantastical asian sword epic. Like all great samurai films this appears to be more than sword slashing action. I’m a Miike fan and look forward to seeing what he does with this.
I can’t think of anything cooler than a well-directed, period samurai movie. I can’t wait to see this.
And while I’m at it, here’s a shout-out to Toshiro Mifune in ‘Yojimbo.’
Totally disagree with you here Jeff.
There are very few of these films around these days i.e. good period peice samurai films which don’t rely on wire acrobatics, flying and assorted superpowers.
Plus it’s directed by Takashi Miike who is, quite frankly, one of the most prolific and insane filmmakers around today. Hollywood could do with a top level director of his work ethic, if not his tastes.
So I’m there when it opens.
I had no idea there was a 7 Samurai remake! Looks a little more ridiculous than the original, but overall, it seems like it’s going to be a good time at the movies.
The Thing: This isn’t a 7 Samurai remake. There was a Japanese movie made in the 60s called Thirteen Assassins, and this is Miike’s remake of it.
Hey you have a very nice blog
