Is that Montgomery Clift? I’m assuming… yes? It’s not Richard Burton, vaguely could look like James Dean, John Cassavettes, or the guy who played Johnny Fontaine in the Godfather, but… I wouldn’t be able to say with 1000% certainty. For some reason, to movie geeks of my age (circling 40), guys like Curtis, Lancaster and Douglas still worked into our heyday, Grant and Stewart and the Duke were beyond iconic with tons of rewatch classics, Gary Cooper was always on in some Western; I can even easily pick out Joel McCrea.
But for some reason, there are two classic movie guys– Montgomery Clift and Spencer Tracy– who I never have had ANY idea what they look like and probably have seen one movie tops with either. This isn’t a post of me trying to brag about being a dumb-ass, but just saying how, speaking of where these icons line up for younger viewers– and how black and white essentially made every actor and especially actress look EXACTLY THE SAME.

For WOMEN? The HELL it is. Think of every beautiful actress of recent vintage– Keira Knightley, Liv Tyler, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel, Charlize Theron, Milla Jovovich, Kirsten Dunst, ANYONE…. Now, do they look better haggard and (most of them) post-pregnancy, post- procedures in 2011? Or did they look better in 2003 when they were in their early twenties? CASE CLOSED.
Also find it funny that while everyone clocked in to rag on me for not being able to pick all of TWO classic movie guys out of a lineup, that still NOBODY chimed in to tell me who that guy is. Thanks for making my point.

Even if you’ve never seen A Place in the Sun (I haven’t) film nerds will have still seen Clift in Red River, From Here to Eternity or (maybe) Judgment at Nuremberg. Right?
Hell, if an actor is name checked in not only an REM song, but also a Clash classic, then you know he’s a MUST SEE.
Clift is outstanding in Lonelyhearts, Young Lions, and Wild River.
I saw From Here to Eternity when I was 14 or 15. That’s the only Clift movie I ever saw. I didn’t remember AT ALL what he looked like.
Again, Tracy and Clift are the two Old Movie Actors who I can’t recognize and never really am sure who they are. Everyone else– Grant, Gable, Bogart, Douglas, Mitchum, Lancaster, Glenn Ford, McCrea, Cooper, you name it– I have seen in tons of stuff.
Clift and Tracy never did anything that was watched in my family.
Lex–go see SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and I CONFESS (classic Hitchcock film). You’re missing out on one of the greatest actors of the 50s and 60s, along with Dean and Brando.
Lex, see Bad Day at Black Rock. It stars Spencer Tracy, and is damn awesome. It also happens to feature Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, and Ernest Borgnine. I couldn’t place Tracy either, until I watched it, and then I could, because I wouldn’t be able to forget the badass from Bad Day at Black Rock.
You should also check out Fury; yes, I know it’s an MGM Code drama from 1936 and kind of an unrealistic message movie, but it’s also Fritz Lang at his creative peak and Tracy is kind of a bad-ass in it. Plus, if you were a struggling newsboy during the Depression, you’d be hoarding starlet magazines and be all “LOOK AT HER!!” over Sylvia Sidney. Yup. The elderly yodeling enthusiast from Mars Attacks is Tracy’s girlfriend in Fury and she’ll probably make you BOW along with Jean Harlow and Veronica Lake.
