Try, Try Again

I know what this sounds like (i.e., “aah, the good old days!”), but I really can’t imagine someone making a more satisfying, better-photographed, delightfully performed and tonally spot-on Three Musketeers than Richard Lester‘s 1973 version…or versions, I should say, since a not-quite-as-good Part 2 installment was released the following year. Plus you have to assume that 3-D will degrade things.

  1. Ray Stevenson = some of this is bound to be watchable.

What the hell is Milla Jovovich doing in this? I don’t mean, why is she in the movie. I mean, what the hell are the things she is actually DOING in this trailer?

  2. Re: Kubrick in Paris…1 comment that I can’t read and cannot post…in the event the post doesn’t mention it, Amazon’s Lolita and Barry Lyndon Stand-Alone pre-order pages went up today $14.99 each.

  3. I’m with you on the Lester version(s). Oliver Reed as Athos is just perfect. I’d love to see a Blu-Ray with the two pictures merged into one long movie as originally intended. But I gather the elements are spread over many continents. And the fire went out of Lester when Roy Kinnear was killed during the filming of THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS in 1988. (And on an only slightly-related topic, Producer Ilya Salkind was recently reported disappeared in Mexico.)

  4. I’d rank Paul WS Anderson as one of the ten worst directors of the past ten years, but … this cast is so eclectically out there … Orlando is back and as a punk bad guy … call me crazy but I want to see this.

I have no faith in it being “good” necessarily but …

  5. Thank god there’s some slow motion shots during the action sequences, I was afraid filmmakers would be sick to fucking death of that.

  6. Yeah, because I’ve been sitting here for a decade since The Matrix came out wishing that they’d do a Hamlet with bullet time. I guess this is as close as I’m going to get.

I’m sure there will be worse ways to pass the time than this, but yeah, they could have hung this whole thing up after the Lester films, they’re pretty much perfect, even the parts that aren’t so great (Spike Milligan mugging it up).

  8. This looks like fun. Milla J is there to get the women in, I assume. Surely you would object to the airship and the rapid-fire cannons before you got to her. I dunno, I think I could enjoy this one.
